Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing more than six weeks after the abduction from her Tucson, Ariz., home—and a forensics expert recently speculated on a "second crime scene" and how it could solve the case.
During an appearance on the NewsNation podcast The Truth of the Matter, journalist Natasha Zouves, spoke with genetic genealogist CeCe Moore, who stars in the ABC documentary series The Genetic Detective.

"I don’t even like to think of this, but if there is a second crime scene that is discovered or her, you know, remains, then that gives them another opportunity to find DNA," Moore explained.
She pointed to a similar kidnapping involving an 85-year-old man in Australia. It involved an older person being taken in the middle of the night by masked, armed individuals. Ultimately, that incident turned out to be a case of mistaken identity, and the man was found dead.
“They found a second crime scene in his case because he was held somewhere for a while. His name is Chris Baghsarian.” Moore said. “Unfortunately, his case has been resolved in, you know, the worst possible way.”
She continued, "He was held at a location, where, by the time they found the location, he was no longer there. But his DNA was all over there. His blood was there, they had cut off his finger, terrible. But they were able to prove he had been there."
At that second location, the kidnappers' DNA was recovered, too, leading to their arrest.

Moore acknowledged that "we don’t want to hope for a second crime scene or remains to be found of Nancy" and that "we all still want to believe she’s alive." However, even if she was kidnapped, held against her will, and is still alive, "that place she’s being held is a second crime scene."
According to the genetic genealogist, it's not a matter of if investigators will find a suspect but when.
“We leave DNA everywhere. Nancy would have left DNA everywhere she was taken, and the perpetrator would have as well," Moore said. "So, it’s just a matter of finding that.”
Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on Jan. 31, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department officially embarking on its search for her on Feb. 1, now with the help of the FBI. As of writing, a suspect has not been named.
