ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Several local artists and music groups, a historic jazz club, and the music of the indigenous Seneca Nation will be inducted into the Rochester Hall of Fame this year.
The 13th annual Rochester Music Hall of Fame induction concert will take place on Sunday, April 26, at the Eastman Theatre. This year’s inductees include award-winning actor, singer, and Broadway star Taye Diggs.
The hall of fame seeks to recognize the forces that have shaped the Rochester region’s music scene. The induction concert will begin at 7 p.m., and you can get tickets here. Here are this year’s inductees:
The La Barbera Brothers: Pat, John, and Joe La Barbera, who grew up in Mt. Morris and became some of the most acclaimed artists in modern jazz, are being honored. They’ve performed internationally for decades. Their work has intersected with music legends, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bill Evans.
Music of the Seneca Nation: The Seneca Nation, one of the six nations part of the indigenous Haudenosaunee Confederacy, is being honored as the oldest and most enduring musical tradition in Western New York. For centuries, Seneca music has served as an expression of cultural identity, spirituality, community life, and storytelling.
The Pythodd Room: Clarissa Street’s legendary jazz club is being honored for serving as one of the 20th century’s most important jazz venues. The Pythodd Room reflected Black entrepreneurship during an era shaped by segregation. It brought jazz legends to Rochester, including George Benson, Lou Donaldson, Stevie Wonder, and Shirley Scott.
Donna Lynne Champlin: Rochester’s Donna Lynne Champlin is being honored for her musical roles in television, film, and the Broadway stage. She’s known for her breakout role in the Emmy-winning TV musical “Crazy Ex‑Girlfriend”, along with roles in Broadway productions of “Sweeney Todd”, “Billy Elliot the Musical”, and more.
Paul Hoeffler: A photographer who documented the jazz greats is being honored. Starting in the 1950s, RIT-educated photographer Paul Hoeffler documented the jazz scene around Rochester, New York City, Toronto, and beyond. He captured intimate moments of legendary artists, including Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Stan Getz, Count Basie, and Dave Brubeck.
Taye Diggs: Rochester’s Taye Diggs, who has won several awards for his Broadway roles and film roles, is being honored. He’s known for his role in the Tony Award-winning production of “Rent”, followed by roles in the TV series “Private Practice”, “Murder in the First”, “All American”, and more.
The Skycoasters: Rochester’s nine-piece, high-energy cover band is being honored. For over 50 years, The Skycoasters has been part of Rochester’s music scene while raising more than $1 million for charity, including Golisano Children’s Hospital and Camp Good Days and Special Times.
