Day 55 of the Chicago Bears offseason. How about some baseball musings before I dive into some football thoughts?
I am a Day 1 fan of the World Baseball Classic. But I understand that not everyone saw it the way I did from the get-go. So to see my friends finally get on board with the WBC and become as enthralled as I have been from the beginning warms my heart. It was a bummer that Puerto Rico wasn’t able to field its full team, but the underdog role suited them well, and it made their trip to the quarterfinals that much more fun. I’m not sure what lies ahead when it comes to MLB’s labor dispute. However, the WBC better survive and live on because I want to see it all unfold in 2029.

To be clear, these are player grades. And they are reflective of the season that was in 2025. However, I am wondering (1) how Bears fans would grade Ryan Poles’ performance last year and (2) what grade they would give him for his efforts in the first wave of free agency? It is wayyyy too early to give Poles an overall offseason grade. With other waves of free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft still on the horizon, it would be irresponsible to grade Poles on the whole. But I do want to get into the minds of fans and get the pulse of how people are feeling now. — Dave (@davebftv) March 13, 2026 A DJ Moore trade would not have surprised me five months ago. Neither would have a release of Tremaine Edmunds. Watching C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Jaquan Brisker, and Nahshon Wright sign deals elsewhere isn’t a shocker. But what is surprising is that they all got one-year deals. I felt certain that Wright would parlay his career year in 2025 into a multi-year contract. Even with Brisker’s concussion history, I thought he could secure a two-year deal that had a third-year option. Same for CJGJ. That all of those players were given only one-year pacts seems to tell us that other NFL GMs didn’t think those players’ 2025 production was repeatable or sustainable. I hope they prove their doubters wrong. On the one hand, it is disappointing that Kevin Byard III isn’t back. A captain for each of his two seasons with the team, Byard was at the heart of everything good that was happening with Chicago’s defense — whether it was with his on-field production or through his leadership. Plus, I think he could have paired nicely with Coby Bryant. But on the other hand, it makes sense that he landed with the New England Patriots. I didn’t think Byard would find his way onto a rebuilding roster. And reuniting with Pats Head Coach Mike Vrabel (who coached him while with the Titans) made New England a fitting landing spot. © Troy Taormina-Imagn Images Add Devin Duvernay to the list of 2025 Bears who have left for greener pastures in the offseason. Jordan Schultz reports (via Twitter/X) that Duvernay, a return specialist who saw some time as a wide receiver, is signing a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Duvernay joins Olamide Zaccheaus (he signed with the Atlanta Falcons) in becoming the second Chicago wideout to leave the team this offseason. For what it’s worth, the Bears signed Kalif Raymond, a receiver who can fill in the returner and receiver roles that Duvernay and Zaccheaus left behind, respectively. In other ex-Bears receiver news, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter/X) that Darnell Mooney is signing a one-year deal with the New York Giants. The deal is worth up to $10 million and reunites him with Matt Nagy, who is entering his first year as the Giants’ offensive coordinator. Mooney’s only 1,000-yard receiving season as a pro came in 2021 as a member of the Chicago Bears while Nagy was the team’s head coach. There was some pushback when we discussed Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman as a possible Bears draft fit. However, his stock seems to have grown since then, and I wonder what the responses would be like if we shared that post now. — PFF College (@PFF_College) March 13, 2026 Troy Pauline (Essentially Sports) reports the Bears were among the teams that asked guard Keylan Rutledge to work out at center during Georgia Tech’s Pro Day. Pauline describes Rutledge as a “fast-rising lineman” who “was smooth and moved incredibly well in drills” during workouts. It sounds like Chicago’s front office and coaching staff are leaving no stone unturned in their search for a new center after the surprise retirement of Pro Bowler Drew Dalman. If the Caleb Banks news takes him off your draft board, just know there are other prospects who could fit what the Bears want at defensive tackle. Perhaps Clemson’s Peter Woods is someone we should be keeping tabs on between now and when the 2026 NFL Draft opens its doors in April:.@clemsonfb DL Peter Woods showing off his athleticism at Clemson's Pro Day ? pic.twitter.com/55LgwFAbBP

It almost got lost in a wild news cycle, but former NFL head coach Pete Carroll spoke exclusively with ESPN’s Rich Cimini for a story. Carroll has kept a low profile since being dismissed by the Las Vegas Raiders at the start of the offseason. Carroll discusses what went wrong in Vegas and why he is taking responsibility for Geno Smith’s downfall during his year with the Raiders. Jaguars GM James Gladstone explains his team’s lack of activity in free agency by sharing that he is playing the compensatory picks game for players lost. It is a bold strategy. But getting picks in what is already being drummed up to be a loaded NFL Draft class isn’t the worst idea.MORE BEARS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
