With Owen Ayers (and Jace Beck) getting the long-awaited promotion from Double-A to Triple-A, the next guy on the “man, shouldn’t he get the bump soon?” list is probably outfielder Kane Kepley at High-A South Bend.
Although the numbers don’t look as overwhelming for the 22-year-old 2025 second rounder as they once did, the shape suggests pretty strongly to me that this is a guy who needs to face better pitching to continue his development. He’s hitting .258/.430/.413/128 wRC+ with a 20.1%(!!!) walk rate against a 14.2% K rate. I have loved seeing the steps forward on the power side, but until he’s facing pitching that can execute more in the zone, it’s really hard to know which of Kepley’s skills will translate up the ladder.
We’ll see if this is the week he heads up to Knoxville.
In the meantime, one of his skills that will definitely translate as he climbs? The glove. Known as a high-quality, speedy defender at any outfield spot, Kepley really showed it off this weekend on a play I knew I had to share. Because it is RIDICULOUS:

Getting to that ball in time to make it a play at second base was already tremendously impressive, but to make a strong, accurate throw FADING AWAY AND SPINNING? I mean, what?!
Kane Kepley may not be Pete Crow-Armstrong out there (nobody is), but this is a stud outfield defender the Cubs have on the way up. Now we just need to know how the bat is coming along against better pitching.
