Mike Love is celebrating a milestone birthday. The Beach Boys co-founder turns 85 today.
Love, who co-founded the iconic pop-rock band more than 60 years ago with his cousins Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson and friend Al Jardine, was born on March 15, 1941, in Los Angeles, California. He has served as a songwriter and frontman for the Beach Boys since 1961, per the official Beach Boys website.
As a member of The Beach Boys, Love’s music has topped the Billboard Hot 100 four times in 60 years. The group’s first No. 1 hit came in July 1964 with “I Get Around,” followed by “Help Me Rhonda” in 1965, and “Good Vibrations” in December 1966. In 1988, the Beach Boys had another chart topper with “Kokomo,” which was the theme for the movie “Cocktail.”
Love also co-wrote and sang lead on multiple Beach Boys classics, including "Surfin' U.S.A." and "California Girl.”
Love’s long history with the Beach Boys hasn’t been without controversy, but he remains the last classic-era member of the group still touring under the Beach Boys name. In March 2026, Bruce Johnston, who joined the group in the mid-1960s, announced his departure from the Beach Boys, as reported by Rolling Stone.
In a statement, Love, who still has a full tour roster for 2026, teased future new music with his longtime bandmate.
“I personally look forward to collaborating in the studio with Bruce in the very near future,” he said, per Ultimate Classic Rock. “I am delighted that Bruce will join the band on special occasions and when his schedule permits, including The Hollywood Bowl performances celebrating the 250th Birthday of our great nation.”
Love once revealed his role model
Love shows no signs of slowing down at 85. Just ahead of his 75th birthday a decade ago, the musician told Glide magazine that he and his bandmates had a role model in Tony Bennett, who was 89 at that time.
“He’s still a wonderful artist and a great performer,” Love said of the legendary crooner, who died in 2023. “That’s a benchmark that he’s laid out. There are some people that are handicapped because of their lifestyle; they’re smoking or drinking or have personal habits that prevent them from doing it like Tony Bennett can. I personally practice transcendental meditation which I learned in 1967. I still do that every day. It helps me maintain my energy level. You just have to be sensible in your lifestyle choices.
Love also said performing songs like “Fun Fun Fun” never got old to him.
“I don’t get jaded,” the Beach Boys veteran said. “My dad and my grandfather were in the sheet metal business, and I got my work ethic from them. They worked very hard to provide a good living for their families. That influence never left me. It’s just a pleasure to do what we do.”
