FINGER LAKES, N.Y. — As flu season comes to a close, health officials reported that this year’s vaccine was not very effective.

According to CDC data, this season’s vaccines were only about 25% to 30% effective in preventing adults from needing medical treatment due to the flu. This marked the lowest effectiveness rate in over a decade.
Children who received the vaccine were about 40% less likely to require treatment at a doctor’s office or hospital.
Officials generally consider a flu vaccine effective if it is 40% to 60% effective.
The CDC said at least 26,000,000 illnesses, 340,000 hospitalizations, and 21,000 deaths occurred because of the flu in the U.S. from Oct.1, 2025, to Feb. 28, 2026.
