UNC men’s soccer returned to the win column on Saturday night vs. Lipscomb, bouncing back from a loss to Clemson one week ago and earning the 3-1 victory over the Bisons.
The Tar Heels put pressure on Lipscomb throughout the first half at Dorrance Field with eight shots but could not break through with a goal, sending the teams into the locker room tied at the break. Just two minutes after returning to the pitch, junior forward Bertil Rygaard Hansen collected a pass near the corner flag and drove into the Bisons goalkeeper’s box. As he was tackled, he flicked the ball toward the middle and junior Ryan Zellefrow connected, firing a shot through traffic and to the keeper’s left for the opening goal.
Only two minutes later, Carolina struck again — with Zellefrow also being a catalyst. The Tar Heels’ press caused Lipscomb to lose the ball near the penalty box, with senior forward Joschi Schelb receiving the ball from a teammate. He passed to Zellefrow on his right, who played it immediately back and caught the defenders off-guard. With a quick poke of his right foot, Schelb guided the ball into the bottom left corner of the net and left Lipscomb suddenly down 2-0. Schelb’s score was his sixth of the season, while Zellefrow’s was his second.

The Bisons pulled a goal back 20 minutes later, after Carolina failed to clear a bouncing ball and Lipscomb attacker Alejandro Valcarce Marin fired a shot past UNC goalkeeper Alan Rutkowski. It was one of only three shots the visitors put on frame, leaving Rutkowski untested for much of the night — although he made a point-blank save of a header in the 74th minute.
Carolina’s third came in the final minute of the game. Sophomore forward Dan Klink scored the first goal of his 2026 campaign with a chip-shot after the Lipscomb goalkeeper came out of his box to clear a pass, but ultimately hit it directly at Klink. The looping shot bounced in to ice the result, with the Dorrance Field crowd erupting into cheers.
UNC men’s soccer is now 3-2-3 on the season and will continue their five-game homestand with the final game on Wednesday, as they face off against West Florida. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
