July 4th has been a rough day for Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) on The Pitt, to say the least. As a fourth-year resident, Robby (Noah Wyle) is looking to her as a source of leadership at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. But it's clear from the premiere that Mohan has other things on her mind, and it manifests in a major way in Episode 10 of Season 2.Throughout the season, Mohan has had trouble staying in the present. Instead, she's thinking about what form of medicine she wants to go into from the seemingly endless options. She's doing everything she can to make sure uninsured patient Orlando Diaz (William Guirola) gets the treatment he needs to avoid another case of diabetic shock. And she's also reconciling the fact that her mother is uprooting their lives, selling her house to go on a cruise with a new boyfriend. And she gets a constant reminder of the latter through recurring phone calls from home throughout the day. Fans of the HBO Max medical drama knew, at some point, something had to break with Dr. Mohan.

While checking out a patient alongside Joy (Irene Choi), Mohan suddenly began to sweat profusely. Her breath grew short, and her chest began to tighten. She stumbled out to the waiting area, where things continued to mount. Seeing she was taking a turn for the worse, Joy mobilized quickly, getting her in a wheelchair and back into the E.D. She then got the rare doctor-on-doctor treatment, as both Langdon (Patrick Ball) and Robby attended to her, fearing a heart attack. The good news: Mohan suffered a panic attack, and is in no clear sign of danger. The bad news: Robby's own mounting issues from the day cause her to snap after finding this out."Wait a minute," he says. "Is this a panic attack because of your mommy issues? Do you need to go home? I don't need the f—king liability. Go home." Mohan is left mortified and, still shellshocked, returns to the patient she was treating by the end of the episode.

The Emmy-winning series opened with the senior attending calling her "Slo-Mo," chastising the time she took with patients. This interaction, on top of Mohan choosing to ask Abbot (Shawn Hatosy), not Robby, for a letter of recommendation, is a clear sign of where things stand between them. So, when Parade got the chance to talk with Supriya Ganesh about Season 2, we had to get her thoughts on where Mohan and Robby stand."I think it's like an uncomfortable truce," the actress says. "It's very paternal in a way, especially if you have a complicated relationship with your dad. You're just on the edge of things going south. And I think especially with Robby, I think she wants him to offer, I don't think she feels comfortable asking him at all. She would hope that he got wind of it, and then somehow he offers. But I think she wouldn't want to ask. I think with Doctor Abbot, there's obviously more comfortability there.""I think there's just some embarrassment there," she continues. "Because it's like your mom moved when you're like 30 and that's upending your life. It's really vulnerable for her to talk to people about it. So I think she needs to feel safe."

But perhaps another reason why everyone in the ED treated Mohan's panic attack so seriously is because of what happened in her own life, courtesy of the character's backstory provided by executive producer John Wells."Her father passed away because of a heart attack," Ganesh says. "He had chest pains, and Samira and her mom takes him to the E.R.. The E.R. people maybe didn't assess him correctly. They say it's fine, send him back home. And then he passes away from the heart attack."Not only does that core memory serve as a grave reminder of Mohan's genetics. But, to Ganesh, it also is the reason behind her ardent, potentially overeager way of spending time with her patients."I think that's so much of what drives some is the fact that she lost her father because of mismanagement of care," she says. "There was definitely some sort of mismanagement and mismanagement of care that happened. And I think that that's something that drives her a lot, because she wants to make sure that doesn't happen to any other little girl."
