Something that came up in an interview, and I thought it made for an interesting question.
Suffice to say, there are some STRONG reactions on these comments from Julio Rodriguez, in lots of different directions, from Mariners fans:

Baseball is a big deal in the United States, but it’s a OMG-BIG-DEAL in the DR and in other Latin American countries. Winning the World Baseball Classic, especially as it comes just once every three years, is something that probably energizes a Latin American country in a way that no other title could.
That said, I also get why some Mariners fans – perhaps already chapped by the friction between Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena coming out of the WBC – aren’t loving that they aren’t the focus, or the implication that putting everything into the MLB season is not what comes first.
In a way, it’s a really different question to be asked of the players and of the fans.
I’m curious what Cubs fans would think if Pete Crow-Armstrong or Alex Bregman or Seiya Suzuki or Daniel Palencia said the same thing Rodriguez did. My guess is that the reactions would be mixed, with something like three distinct groups: one that is outraged, believing that the World Series should be all that really matters; another that thinks pride for one’s country/heritage is the most important thing, so they see this as obvious; and a third, which is probably where I’d fall, which thinks that it’s totally fine for a player to have that feeling, but also to care more – as a fan – about the Cubs winning the World Series.
So it wouldn’t make me MAD if any of the Cubs players felt this way, but I would certainly prefer if the thing that excites them most in their professional lives right now is winning the World Series. Because I’m a Cubs fan waaaaaaay before I’m a fan of any particular WBC entrant.
