This ’90s Show Was Canceled After One Season—Then Became a Worldwide TV Phenomenon

What is now considered an iconic show from the '90s almost didn't return for a second season. Baywatch, which is in the works for a big reboot by Fox, premiered in 1999 and ultimately ran for 11 seasons. However, the show's original network, NBC, bailed on it after one season.

David Hasselhoff played Lieutenant Mitch Buchannon of the Los Angeles County lifeguards on Baywatch. The red bikinis worn by his female staff became legendary.

After one season and lackluster reviews, the network canceled Baywatch. However, Hasselhoff felt certain there was an audience for the show. After he managed to revitalize it, Baywatch then went on to become one of the most-watched shows worldwide, ever.

In announcing the Fox reboot, Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn told Variety, "In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status."

Thorn continued, "Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is set for a modern-day comeback."

Years ago, Hasselhoff explained his role in bringing the show back for a second chance after its initial cancellation. "You know, it was canceled, and I was upset with NBC."

According to Rolling Stone, Hasselhoff wasn't ready to give up on Baywatch, despite its initial cancellation and poor reviews. He managed to snag a syndication deal for it, which brought it back to life.

Over the course of its 11-year run, Baywatch eventually aired in over 140 countries. In its prime, it was one of the world's most-watched television shows, at one time reaching 1.1 billion worldwide viewers.

Entertainment Weekly noted in 1993 that Baywatch was the one of the top three rated U.S. syndicated shows. The only two syndicated shows performing above it were spinoffs in the Star Trek universe.

Across the globe, Baywatch was a top show in Australia, France, the U.K., New Zealand, Ireland, and Germany. It then spread across Asia thanks to a satellite broadcast network launched by Rupert Murdoch.

While Hasselhoff was the initial star of the show, the Baywatch beauties took center stage. Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Carmen Electra, Erika Eleniak, Donna D'Errico, and Nicole Eggert were among those actresses who ran along the beach in the series and went on to have big careers.

In February 2017, Hasselhoff told People what he thought ultimately drove the worldwide success of Baywatch. "You've got to have heart. You've got to have a story. You've got to have humor. And you've got to have action."

Looking back, Hasselhoff reflected, "I think the favorite thing about Baywatch was the fact that it was all run by us."

He explained, "The show was canceled, we brought it back, and there was four of us. So one of us was a writer, one of us was a director, one of us was the lifeguard." Hasselhoff added that he was "the PR guy, the star, keeping up the morale... Keeping it afloat, and keeping it positive, and keeping it light."

By engineering the Baywatch revival via syndication, Hasselhoff earned a lot of money. He told Entertainment Weekly, back during the show's run, "I think I'm the highest-paid actor in syndication. I'm not boasting about it. I'm just happy."

The Fox Baywatch sequel is expected to air during the 2026-2027 season, according to Deadline. So far, stars announced who are joining the series include Pretty Little Liars alum Shay Mitchell, model and Dancing with the Stars alum Brooks Nader, and The Flash and Arrow star Stephen Amell. In addition, Baywatch alum David Chokachi is returning as Cody Madison.
