Egypt’s appliance prices skyrocket 200% amid currency volatility: Experts

The Egyptian Tax Experts Association has issued an urgent warning regarding the unsustainable surge in home appliance prices, noting that costs have now eclipsed the purchasing power of even upper-middle-class citizens.

Amidst a stagnant market and shifting economic policies, the Association is calling for a strategic four-pillar intervention to stabilize the industry.

This proposal includes aggressive localization of production, tax relief for manufacturers, and a critical reassessment of recent trade protectionist measures that have inadvertently driven up production costs.

Supply chain crises and the push for reform

    The vanishing “Ramadan offers”

Senator Ashraf Abdel-Ghani, Secretary of the Senate’s Economic Committee and founder of the Association, highlighted a grim shift in market dynamics. While the month of Ramadan traditionally sees competitive promotions on household goods, such offers have vanished this year. Furthermore, major manufacturers have reportedly restricted supply, fulfilling only 20% of dealer orders in anticipation of further price hikes.

    A 200% price surge

In a statement released Friday, Abdel-Ghani noted that appliance prices have skyrocketed by nearly 200% following the liberalization of the exchange rate and global supply chain disruptions. “The market can no longer absorb further price increases,” he warned. He pointed out that while the Ministry of Industry has a plan to localize the production of sheet metal—a core component for the sector—local output currently stands at only 900,000 tons, barely meeting half of the domestic demand.

    The four-pillar recovery plan

To combat this crisis, the Association outlined four urgent measures:

Manufacturing incentives: The government’s plan must prioritize competitive land pricing for new projects, flexible payment methods, and low-interest loans to finance production lines and working capital.

Revising anti-dumping duties: Abdel-Ghani called for a re-evaluation of the Investment Minister’s Decree No. 399 of 2025, which imposed temporary anti-dumping duties (5% to 12%) on imported sheet metal. These duties have increased production costs by up to 7%. He urged a suspension of these fees until domestic production capacity can fully bridge the supply gap.

Empowering SMEs: Providing tax and financing facilities to small workshops and SMEs is essential to transform them into feeder industries for major appliance manufacturers.

Tax burden reduction: Manufacturers currently face tax burdens exceeding 20%, comprised of Value Added Tax (VAT), resource development fees, and customs duties on various components. Abdel-Ghani emphasized the need to alleviate these pressures to ensure the continuity of local factories.
