Invincible boss addresses major actor absence in season 4

Season 4 of Invincible is once again set to up the ante with the start of the Viltrumite War saga and its other unique stories, adapted from the comics. But one major change is coming in the shape of Aaron Paul, who won’t be rejoining the show as Powerplex — and the franchise’s creator has given us a bit more insight behind it all.

Voiced by the Breaking Bad actor since the character's debut, Powerplex (aka Scott Duvall) was one of the show's most tragic figures.

After being on a war path of revenge against Mark Grayson’s Invincible for the deaths of his sister and niece, Powerplex ends up going too far with his electrical powers against the hero, and accidentally kills his wife and infant child as well.

Powerplex had lines in episodes spread throughout the rest of season 3, and it was initially assumed Aaron Paul would be back to voice the character in season 4 of Invincible, if the villain was returning.

However, Paul revealed in a late 2025 episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast that although he was asked to come back for season 4, he declined the offer due to playing the character being "just way too grueling on [his] psyche". He even added that, due to the actor’s dedicated approach to the character, being Powerplex was a "skin [he] didn’t feel comfortable in".

When Radio Times asked Invincible co-showrunners and executive producers, Robert Kirkman (also Invincible’s creator) and Simon Racioppa, if they were surprised about Paul’s departure, they suggested that the actor declined to return based on logistics.

Kirkman said: "Animation is a different animal. In live action, a lot of times, you have to change how things are written to expand roles and things to maintain having an actor stay on for a role.

"In animation, there’s a little bit more freedom in following the actual story."

Continuing, he added: "I think that if you look at the Powerplex character, he's still present, and he, you know, pops up from time to time, but having a real meaty episode that focuses on him, that's something where you can get Aaron Paul to come in and do a great performance — but it is sometimes difficult to have that same actor come in just for, you know, a scene or two here and there, mainly because of scheduling.

"It's really difficult because you can't lock an actor in for animation and, you know, control their availability. So you're kind of at the whim of whatever movie or television show or other thing that they're doing, and our cast is filled with massively in-demand actors, and so there are going to be times here and there where, you know, they're just not going to be available."

Across it's run, Invincible has become packed with incredibly famous actors, including Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson), JK Simmons (Omni-Man), Sandra Oh (Debbie Grayson), Walton Goggins (Cecil), Gillian Jacobs (Eve) and Seth Rogen (Allen the Alien).

The animated series has become one of Amazon's most celebrated properties, with a fifth season already commissioned for release in 2027. In addition, a video game titled Invincible VS will release on 30 April, 2026, with the gameplay trailer giving us our first impression of how the newly cast Powerplex might sound.

Invincible season 4 will be made available to stream on Amazon Prime from Wednesday, 18 March 2026.
