What’s Happening: St. Patrick’s Day celebrations

This weekend is all about St. Patty’s parades and fresh slices on Pi Day. For some more art-filled events, check out two fun fiber installations – one in Parker, one in Telluride — or grab tickets to see the American Ballet Theatre’s up-and-coming studio company during their two-day stop in Colorado Springs.

March 12-18

St. Patrick’s Saturday. St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17. And what do we do when a holiday lands on a Tuesday? We ignore that Tuesday and celebrate the Saturday before instead.

Which means this weekend is the time to drag out that bright green tee and head to one of the St. Patrick’s Day parades happening across the state. Take your pick fromDenver, Fort Collins orColorado Springs on the Front Range.

If you like the parade vibe, but don’t love standing on a street corner for an hour-plus, then the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Boulder is the place to be. Enjoy a single block of dancers, bagpipers, wolfhounds, cruiser bikes, and the Paddy ’O Drill Team. Just down the street is the St. Patrick’s Day puppy parade and costume contest. All proceeds from the puppy parade go to POSO dog rescue.

If you can wait until the official date, Leadville, a town with deep ties to Irish culture, holds a parade along Harrison Avenue on Tuesday. In the meantime, you can watch the Fatty Patty winter mountain bike race or visit the Irish Miners’ Memorial, which honors close to 1,300 Irish immigrants who flocked to Leadville during the Silver Rush days.

Saturday also happens to be 3.14 aka “Pi Day,” so bonus points if you sneak in a slice while you’re out and about.
