Treating yourself to a manicure or pedicure is one of the easiest ways to slot in some much-needed TLC while you're navigating a busy schedule. After all, there's something that feels so luxurious about making time for self-care. If you're anything like us, you probably go into autopilot during your nail appointments and mostly catch up on surface-level topics with your nail technician. But they're actually a wealth of knowledge, and it's worth asking a few questions about your nails along the way. Not sure where to start? Parade caught up with a top nail technician to discover the one thing she wishes her clients asked more often.
We chatted with celebrity manicurist and educator Julie Kandalec, whose celebrity clients include Selena Gomez, Pink, Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt and more. Kandalec, a brand ambassador for KISS Nails, also works as a beauty mentor and entrepreneurship coach via her Julie K Nail Academy.
Throughout her career, Kandalec has seen that nail appointments can double as a relaxing and educational moment for clients. With that in mind, she's sharing several questions you should consider asking your nail technician at your next appointment so you can learn a lot more about your nails while also pampering yourself.

While you're making small chat during your nail appointment, Kandalec suggests working in one key question for your nail technician: "What product are you putting on my nails?"
"I wish clients asked me more about what was on their nails!" she tells Parade. "This helps clients and nail professionals alike because every product removes and acts differently, and being able to tell your next nail tech what's on your nails will prevent damage from improper removal."
The possibilities include hard gel, soft gel, acrygel, dip powder, BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) or full-coverage nails—and the best removal process can differ between them.

Kandalec likens the process to getting your hair colored after swimming in a chlorinated pool and not telling your stylist.
"You can be the best professional in the world, but without knowing exactly what product is where, we are limited on your results," she says.

Why This Is Helpful To Ask
Whether you prefer traditional nail polish, hard gel or dip powders, knowing what is on your nails is particularly important when it comes time to remove it.
For instance, Kandalec notes that hard gel can't be soaked off since it's "not porous." Instead, it needs to be filed off.
"If you try to soak it off, it will not budge even a little, which can cause damage as the nail professional may not realize that it's hard gel as they try to soak and soak and nothing is happening. Or, they go in with force and try to pry them off (since they won't soak off at all), which, of course, will cause months' worth of damage," she says.
Similarly, if you're using a no-wipe or a no-cleanse top coat, it's best to keep in mind that they're acetone-resistant.
"This means if the nail artist does not file the top layer of gel off, the acetone cannot penetrate because it's non-porous. It can also waste a lot of time trying to do a soak-off: You go to remove the first removal foil and the color is still there, as shiny as it was 20 minutes before," Kandalec explains.
Additionally, dip powders are typically "more durable" and consequently "harder to remove," per Kandalec.
"It takes a more coarse grit nail file or e-file bit to remove, and will take a really long time to soak off if your nail pro is unsure what it is as well. One time, a celebrity client had dip powder on, and even with an extra coarse grit e-file bit, it took ages for me to be able to get through it," she explains.

How would I explain what I have on my nails to the next person who does them? What is the proper way to remove my nails? Can I remove them myself, or do I need to see a professional to remove these? How do I prevent my nail enhancements from lifting and breaking?Up Next:
