Scottie Pippen Sells $6.2 Million Worth of Basketball Memorabilia!

Earlier this month, Chicago Bulls Hall of Fame small forward Scottie Pippen had a successful fire sale via famed auction house Sotheby’s, garnering $6.2 million in sales per collectible expert Darren Rovell.

Per Rovell, Pippen’s game-worn “Flu Game” jersey went out for a whopping $486K. That’d be Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz, when a thoroughly sick Michael Jordan mounted a Herculean effort, with the support of Pippen, to down Utah 90-88 en route to an eventual six-contest series win.

Across 44 minutes, Jordan somehow scored 38 points on 13-of-27 shooting from the field (2-of-5 from distance) and 10-of-12 shooting from the foul line, while also logging seven boards, five assists, three steals and a block. Pippen, no slouch himself, logged a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double, while also chipping in five dimes and a steal during the effort.

Pippen also sold off all six of his miniature Bulls title trophies for $640K, according to Rovell.

Pippen’s Fire Sale Included Some Non-Pippen Items

Somehow, Pippen got his mitts on a game-worn Hall of Fame Boston Celtics small forward Larry Bird’s 1992 “Dream Team” men’s Olympics jersey. That notched the highest price on the day, even though Bird’s back rendered him relatively ineffective during that entire Barcelona run. Pippen, though, was in his absolute prime at the time, fresh off winning two straight championships with the Bulls. Rovell notes that the Bird jersey fetched $896K.

The fairly comprehensive collection also included game-worn sneakers. Why the 10-time All-Defensive Teamer is ditching so many Chicago mementos is anyone’s guess, but here’s hoping he held on to some supplemental key items at least.

Among registered bidders, 14 percent represented new additions to Sotheby’s.

Pippen was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics with the No. 5 pick out of Central Arkansas in the 1987 NBA Draft, and was promptly traded to the Bulls on draft night. Jerry Krause also selected power forward Horace Grant out of Clemson. That young dynamic duo eventually formed a defense-first Big Three that led Chicago to three straight championships, from 1991-93.

When Jordan retired for the first time ahead of 1993-94, Pippen submitted arguably his best season, guiding Chicago to a 55-win run and a controversial seven-game Eastern Conference Semifinals series defeat to the New York Knicks. He finished third in MVP voting that season.

Grant departed for the Orlando Magic in free agency the next summer. Jordan returned late into the 1994-95 regular season. After a second straight semifinal-round exit, Chicago managed to retool. Krause brought in former two-time Defensive Player of the Year Dennis Rodman, himself a future Hall of Famer, to serve as a small-ball four. The Bulls dashed off another three straight titles, from 1996-98. When Jordan retired a second time, the dynasty splintered for good.

Pippen was traded to the Houston Rockets, but rediscovered his passion for the game during the 1999-2000 season with the then-rising Portland Trail Blazers. He returned to Chicago in 2003-04 for his final NBA season, playing alongside a then-rookie Kirk Hinrich under new GM John Paxson.

All told, Pippen was a seven-time All-Star and a seven-time All-NBA Teamer. He’s a member of the league’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams, and generally regarded as one of the best perimeter defenders in the history of the game.

Pippen had been a Bulls team ambassador until ESPN commitments got in the way. Now a free agent again, he was recently spotted sitting with Chicago co-owner Michael Reinsdorf at a game. Could an official reunion be in the works? We can only hope.
