PACIFIC BEACH – A long-time volunteer is getting recognition.
Lily Higman was celebrated as the San Diego Unified School District’s Area C Volunteer of the Year during a school-wide staff meeting on Wednesday, March 4.
Higman has been a steadfast volunteer for more than 13 years with the Mission Bay Cluster, as her three children have all moved through Pacific Beach schools.
“This year is her last as a parent of an SDUSD student,” said Mission Bay High Principal Dr. Eric Brown. “This is a wonderful time to acknowledge how grateful Mission Bay staff and I are to Mrs. Lily Higman for her dedication and support. The Volunteer of the Year award is truly well-deserved.”
As a member of the school’s Site Governance Team, Higman brought balanced perspectives to the team and prompted re-evaluation of learning targets in classrooms.
“Her approach and messaging are always delivered in a way that reveals her deep caring and understanding of the challenges facing teachers and students in a rapidly shifting educational environment,” Brown said.
Recently, she played a major role in helping establish the Track and Field Booster Club. She consistently supports multiple sports teams and has been behind major school improvements for athletics, including the football team tunnel.
“Lily has been a vital link between Mission Bay and the larger community. In every group, committee, or council she serves on, she finds meaningful ways to bring support back to our school,” Brown added.
