Alabama men’s golf struggles to 11th-place finish at The Hayt

Despite flashes of strong individual play, No. 15-ranked Alabama men’s golf finished 11th at The Hayt in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, a result head coach Jay Seawell said fell short of the program’s expectations.

“I think our guys would agree that our performance this week was not up to the standard that we have set for ourselves,” Seawell said. “I thought we had some opportunities early in the tournament to position ourselves around the leaders, so there were certainly things we can build off there for our next tournament.

Junior Brycen Jones led the charge for the Crimson Tide in round 1, shooting a 68 for 4-under par. Followed by a 1-under-par round of 71, he ended his tournament with a 2-over-par round to finish tied for 26th individually and an overall score of 3-under-par.

Sophomore Nicholas Gross finished his tournament tied for 36th, highlighted by a team-low round on day 1, a 5-under-par 67. Gross finished the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 74, 2-over-par, in his final 36 holes.

Team captain senior Jonathan Griz and junior Jack Mitchell finished their tournaments at 1-over-par, tied for 49th. In round 1, Griz shot an even-par round of 72, followed by a 2-under-par round of 70, before finishing off his tournament with a 3-over-par round of 75.

Mitchell began his tournament with an even-par round of 72, followed by a 2-over-par round of 74, and ended with his best round of the weekend, shooting a 71 for a 1-under-par.

Sophomore William Jennings, who was recently named to The Haskins Award watchlist after two individual wins in the fall, is an award honoring the most prestigious collegiate golfer in the United States.

Jennings had the worst tournament of his young career. Jennings finished in 59th place largely due to a slow start in round 1 when he shot a 4-over-par round of 76. Jennings shot a 1-under-par round of 71 on day two before concluding his tournament with an even-par round of 72.

The Crimson Tide also had graduate student Connor Brown compete individually, who had the best tournament of the six Crimson Tide golfers, finishing in 16th place with a 5-under-par. In round 1, he shot a 73 1-over-par, followed by a 68 4-under-par, before finishing his tournament off with a 2-under-par round of 70.

“Overall, this was a pretty lackluster performance,” Seawell said. “I think we all need to look at ourselves in the mirror – myself included – and know we’re better than this. We did not perform well, but these are the types of performances that you need sometimes to get you going in the right direction.”

The Crimson Tide will be back in action at the Linger Longer Invitational on March 20- 22 in Eatonton, Georgia.

“I know we have a very talented team that has some reachable goals this season, so we need to use this to get better and become the team I know we can be,” Seawell said.
