Video captured the shocking moment a massive tank at a suburban aquarium unexpectedly burst.
Something Fishy Pets in Fox Lake posted the footage to social media, saying the rupture happened Monday with “no warning or anything.”
“Looks like the top seam gave out,” the store wrote on social media.
The owner said an estimated 350 fish were in the 2,000-gallon tank at the time of the break.
The shop was closed at the time and no customers were present, but water from the tank quickly flooded the building.
“Very sad because we almost had it to where we wanted it,” the post read.
It was not immediately clear why the tank broke or how many fish were saved. The store’s owner has vowed to rebuild.
A fundraising page set up for the store in wake of the event said the owners purchased the pet store in 2025 with hopes of restoring it.
The massive tank was a centerpiece for the store and had been in place for 20 years.
“That tank, after 20 years, blew out, and 2,000 gallons of water flooded their store, destroyed everything in sight, and now the tank is trash and will need to be cut and removed,” the fundraising page read.
While it’s unclear if the tank will be covered by insurance, Trevor O’Gorman, who was helping to stock and aquascape the tank, estimated a rebuild could cost up to $20,000.
“Not only is the tank gone, but a ton of the fish that were in there as well. We were at over 350 fish in there at this point, which was amazing because it was such a large tank, but so many tetras, corydoras, cat oto, farowella, angelfish, severums, plecos, geophagus—you would never know there were that many fish in there,” he wrote.
