WINN-ING GOLD .. Haley Winn’s journey from Williamson to Milan

In February, Haley Winn, hailing from Webster by way of Williamson, won gold with Team USA’s women’s hockey team. News10NBC caught up with the skating defender on her journey from Rochester to Milan.

In Williamson on a backyard ice rink, Olympic dreams began.

“Haley and the brothers, I think some of their fondest memories of their youth are, are in that backyard rink,” said Haley Winn’s dad, Mike.”

Built by dad Mike, brothers Casey, Ryan and Tommy played on the sheet of ice with their little sister Haley.

“That’s definitely helped shape me into who I am today,” Haley said. “So, I wouldn’t change it for the world. It was so much fun.”

Soon it went from fun to just about everything that Haley though about.

“Just from a very young age, as soon as she could even pick what movie she wanted to watch, I’d put on princess movies and she’d be like, no, I want to watch miracle,” Haley’s mom, Janet recalls. “And that was her favorite movie.”

And by third grade, Haley win was calling her shot.

“Yeah, we got asked our dream job and I said, hockey Olympian,” Haley said.

And it didn’t take long to realize she’d be right and that she’d soon become the best athlete in a family with three sons who played college hockey.

“Just watching her make the plays that she does, it’s stuff that I probably couldn’t do in college,” Casey said reflecting back on watching Haley in high school at Bishop Kearney.

There, she developed and became a member of the U18 national team, then attended Clarkson University for four years before becoming the second overall pick and the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

So it wasn’t necessarily a surprise that when then got named to the Olympic roster. But that didn’t make it any less special.

“She actually FaceTimed the whole family,” Janet said.

“I was able to call my parents and call my brothers,” Haley said. “There was some tears of joy.”

    “There were tears,” Janet confirmed.

Haley’s parents joined her in Italy while her brothers made the trip just in time for team USA’s third game, a preliminary tilt against Switzerland.

“We weren’t even sitting with our parents. So we were finding them in the crowd and just, like, waving over to them, trying to, like, celebrate all together,” Casey said.

Jubilation ensued because Haley had just scored her first Olympic goal in front of her family, finding the back of the net in the game’s opening period.

“Just the look of pure joy on her face,” Mike recalled.

“They said, looking at my face, it was the most genuine smile, I’ve had probably ever. I just I couldn’t stop smiling,” Haley said.

Team USA went on to one of the most dominant runs in Olympic history, 33 goals to two, backed by Haley on the blue line, and wrapped up the tournament with an overtime win in the gold medal against Canada.

“Winning? Yeah, I don’t even know the emotions that went through my head,” Haley joked when trying to collect the thoughts of achieving one of the greatest achievements in sports.

After the shock settled in and the hardware was handed out, the newly minted medalist sought after her family.

“She found us in the stands right away and held up her arms, held up her flag,” Janet said.

“She came up to the railing, alongside the rink and, I mean, I think that’s when it all kind of hit me,” Haley’s youngest brother, Haley said.

A journey that started in Williamson and is taking the Winns–Mike Janet, Casey, Ryan and Tommy all over the world, watching Haley’s ascent to become one of the best in the sport.

“This has been my dream for so long that, it began to be a part of my brother’s dream and my parents dream for me because that’s just the kind of people they are, and they’re so supportive,” Haley said. “So not only was I accomplishing my dream, but I think their’s as well. And it was just so special to have them over there. And just seeing them after a game like that, it was it was incredible.

After the Olympics, Haley returned to the PWHL’s Boston Fleet where her squad boasts the best record in the league.
