Chicago-area residents asked to use less water amid severe storms, heavy rainfall

As the Chicago area faces a risk of severe weather Tuesday, residents are asked to limit their water use to help prevent flooding and protect water quality.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District issued an Overflow Action Day Alert on Tuesday as most of the Chicago area is at risk of severe weather starting Tuesday evening and continuing into early Wednesday morning.

Residents are asked to delay showers and baths, flush toilets less frequently and wait to run the dishwasher or washing machine amid the storm, according to the alert.

“Flooding and sewer backups can happen for a variety of reasons. To help prevent flooding inside or around your home, there are actions you and your family can take before and during rainfall,” MWRD said in the alert.

A flash flood watch was issued by the National Weather Service for Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management around 7:35 p.m. for the majority of the Chicago-area, including Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Cook and Will counties until 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

A flash flood warning was issued for northern LaSalle County until midnight, with NWS warning people along creeks, drainage ditches and other waterways should take “immediate precautions to protect life and property.”

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms were expected, with rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour possible, according to NWS.

A large part of Cook County and a number of suburban counties are under an “enhanced” risk of severe weather, a level three of five, according to the Storm Prediction Center. Parts of Grundy, LaSalle and Will counties are under a “moderate” risk for severe weather, a level four out of five.

Severe storms are expected to develop through this evening, ending overnight for areas SE of I-80. Periods of rain will continue Wednesday AM, ending from NW to SE. The rain may mix with some light snow north of I-80. Windy conditions are expected Thursday night into Friday. pic.twitter.com/ICv6ewYMQh

Residents can take a number of other steps to reduce the amount of water entering sewage systems, according to NWS, including the installation of rain gardens or rain barrels on properties. Landscaping with native plants or planting more trees will also help to absorb more water.
