Trey Hendrickson was the consensus No. 1 free agent available when the NFL’s open negotiation period began on Monday. Traditionally, someone with his résumé — four Pro Bowls, first-team All-Pro recognition, 81 sacks in nine seasons — gets a bag at the outset of free agency. And yet, here we are on Tuesday afternoon without a landing spot for one of the league’s most highly regarded pass rushers.
What gives?
Well, ESPN’s Adam Schefter provides an explanation as to why Trey Hendrickson is still, as of this posting, a free agent:

— Get Up (@GetUpESPN) March 10, 2026More from Schefty:
“He’s been in contact with a number of teams. The issue, I think, is this. You see the Houston Texans go out and give Danielle Hunter a $40 million a year extension. You see, yesterday, the Carolina Panthers shocked the NFL and gave Jaelan Phillips $30 million a year. Trey Hendrickson sees himself in the company of those kinds of players. And, so you would think there would be a corresponding contract in that vicinity.
But if there’s not a team out there that’s willing to give you $40 or $30 million, sometimes, it takes a player a little bit of time to understand how the market works like that, and to accept that just because Danielle Hunter might get $40 (million), you might not get $40 (million). Just because Jaelan Phillips gets $30 (million), doesn’t mean you get $30 (million).
Right now, he’s talking to a bunch of teams, but nobody has met his price just yet. And he’s a very strong-minded, prideful person. He wants to get his price. And until he feels like he does, he’s not willing to compromise on that.”
Oof. This has to be a sobering moment for Trey Hendrickson, who probably thought he was going to get paiiiiiiid after leaving the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency.

How far apart are Trey Hendrickson and the teams talking shop with the Pro Bowl pass rusher? Apparently, it is a significant number:
As of this morning there were teams I spoke with who said the gap between what he wanted and what they were willing to pay was close to $10M per year t.co/9Yf1TRKEHc
— Jonathan Jones (@jjones9) March 10, 2026Wow! A $10 million gap isn’t a small number. Even in the NFL, where teams have billion-dollar valuations and the league rakes in revenues by the tens of billions each year, a player and a team being $10 million apart is nothing to sneeze at in the grand scheme of things. This type of difference makes me wonder what Trey Hendrickson’s representation thought he was going to get in the open market. If I were Hendrickson, I would not be happy with this situation. But if I were a team in the hunt for pass-rusher help, I would see his crisis as an opportunity.
2026 NFL DRAFT: FALL OUT FROM DAY 1 OF FREE AGENCY
As teammate Patrick Flowers wrote earlier on Tuesday, questions still remain regarding the Chicago Bears’ pass rushing problem. Yes, signing defensive tackle Neville Gallimore helps the interior mix. And I like the pending additions of safety Coby White and linebacker Devin Bush to their respective position groups. But it would still be nice to add an impact pass rusher. And with Hendrickson’s market seeming falling apart, perhaps the Bears could provide a soft landing.
NEW BEARS SIGNINGS: Bush | Bryant | Gallimore | Raymond
Save for Pro Football Focus analysts opining about Trey Hendrickson and the Bears being a perfect fit for one another, there haven’t been too many reports connecting the two parties as sharing mutual interest. However, I can’t help but think that a slow developing market could change things. I’m not sure how this situation resolves itself, but this could be something worth monitoring if the price is right. And while I’m not saying to expect Hendrickson’s market to collapse like Nahshon Wright’s apparently did, I feel as if it worth keeping an eye on right now.
