Sunny skies and near-record warmth are in the Chicago-area forecast Monday, but it won’t last long as a cold front brings stormy conditions and severe weather chances with “all weather hazards at play” Tuesday.
“A pretty lovely day,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, of Monday. “Lots of sunshine, very little clouds.”
Temperatures Monday wil range from the 60s to the low-to-mid 70s, Roman said, with a high of 71 degrees.
“That’s the average high for May, 16” Roman added.
Monday will also be breezy, with winds gusting about 20 to 25 miles-per-hour throughout the day and into the evening.
The spring-like weather will start to change Tuesday, Roman said, as a front passing through will bring a wide range of temperatures, dropping into the 40s for some. The front will also bring rounds of storms, some of which could be strong to severe with hail, damaging winds and even the chance for tornadoes.
Tuesday’s scattered storms were expected to begin about 4 or 5 p.m., Roman said. There’s a higher chance for stronger storms to form to the south, where 60 and 70-degree readings were expected.
According to the National Weather Service, areas to the south Tuesday afternoon and overnight will be under an “enhanced” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level three of five. Counties further north will be under a “slight” risk of severe weather at that time, which ranks as level two.
“All severe hazards, including tornadoes, large to destructive hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding are possible,” the NWS warned. “The main threat for tornadoes exists mainly south of I-80.”
Winds could reach 70 miles-per-hour especially in parts to the south, Roman said. In areas to the north, the main threats are large hail, “torrential rainfall” and flash flooding.
According to the NWS, the “active” stretch of weather will continue Wednesday, with cooler conditions and another system to bring a chance for showers and windy conditions later in the week.
