The University announced Thursday that the students in the first cohort of the Alabama-Esslingen-Mercedes Exchange program have been chosen.

AEMX serves students from the University; Hochschule Esslingen in Neckar, Germany; and Mercedes-Benz US International.

Student participants are required to learn German alongside their engineering studies in the form of a German language summer course. They then take an automotive engineering course taught in German at the University and spend their junior year abroad in Germany with an internship in the automotive industry.

AEMX is a reboot of an original program in the Lee J. Styslinger College of Engineering called Two Steps Ahead that combined automotive engineering and German language and ended with a year abroad in Germany. The program was started in 2013 by executive director of the Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies Bharat Balasubramanian, former CEO of Mercedes-Benz US International Markus Schaefer and Christof Wolfmaier from HSE.

Some UA alumni that participated in Two Steps Ahead are now employed at Mercedes-Benz US International, such as JP Smith. After his participation in the program, he began working at MBUSI and is now a local project coordinator at the company.

“Becoming fluent in the German language, especially when paired with cultural immersion where I took engineering courses and worked as an intern at Mercedes-Benz in German, has set me apart as an engineer at Mercedes-Benz,” Smith said. “It opened the door to possibilities in this company and in my career that I could never have imagined were possible.”

In December 2025, UA President Peter Mohler, MBUSI CEO Federico Kochlowski and Wolfmaier signed an international Memorandum of Understanding to formalize the three institutions partnering once again.

Balasubramanian said the group of students chosen was an excellent group.

“They are passionate about what they want to do, and it shows,” he said.

All students chosen for the new cohort are Presidential or National Merit Scholars.

The students representing the University are: Owen Bell, Ryan Borchelt, Cameron Dickhut, Caelan Dunlea, Sam Engellant, Zach Feldkamp, Thomas Gallagher, Ben Gilkerson, Samantha Hatcher, Ben Keoshkerian, Dominic Lang, Ryan McKenzie, Alexander Rose, Cole Storch and Stella Watkins.
