Today, the Chicago Cubs made their first roster moves of the season, reducing their Spring Training roster from 62 to 53 players. Although you’ll recognize many of the names from the cut sheet, including top pitching prospect Jaxon Wiggins, there aren’t really any meaningful decisions being made.

    Let’s check it out.

    Here’s the Cubs announcement:

Right-handed pitchers RILEY MARTIN and JACK NEELY and infielders BEN COWLES and JAMES TRIANTOS have been optioned to Triple-A lowa.

Infielder PEDRO RAMÍREZ has been optioned to Double-A Knoxville.

Right-handed pitchers GRANT KIPP, CONNOR NOLAND, CONNOR SCHULTZ and JAXON WIGGINS have been returned to minor league camp.

I suppose you could stretch to say that Jack Neely had a teeny, tiny, outside shot at breaking camp with the team (he’s on the 40-man and has been up in MLB before), but I don’t think that was anyone’s expectation. We will probably see him at some point this year.

The lefty, Riley Martin, is also on the 40-man, but is behind several other lefties in the bullpen picture. As a 27-year-old with 2.5 seasons at Triple-A, you have to imagine he’ll get a chance to do something soon.

Ben Cowles and James Triantos are just infield bench depth at this point. The latter is still a prospect, but he’ll have to start hitting if he wants to recapture any meaningful prospect juice.

Pedro Ramirez had a really nice spring for a 21-year-old ticketed for Double-A, slashing .368/.440/.579 (150 wRC+) in 25 Cactus League plate appearances. He’s been elevated to top-10 Cubs prospect by MLB Pipeline, though as we know, the system is not what it was a year ago.

Grant Kipp, Connor Noland, and Connor Schultz should probably all be emergency starting pitcher depth at Iowa this season, though they’re also behind a loooong list of starters with rotational priority if it comes to that.

And then lastly, there’s Jaxon Wiggins, who was never going to break camp with the team, but should be a factor for the Chicago Cubs at some point this season. Wiggins threw just 3.1 innings for the Cactus League Cubs this year, allowing 5 earned runs on six hits and a walk (albeit with 5 strikeouts).

Not a great showing, but completely meaningless. We’ll see him eventually, and I remain excited about his potential.
