Robert Plant Shared What He Enjoyed Most About Being in Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin, which disbanded in 1980, included Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, and the late John Bonham. In a May 2024 interview with Dan Rather, Plant, now 77, reflected on his time in the band. He said he appreciated that Led Zeppelin was able to establish their career as musicians before there were "charts" or any "structure" on how to become a successful rock band.
"We were flying by the seat of our pants into this thing," said the vocalist during the interview.
He said that he and his bandmates didn't have "etiquette" and weren't the ideal guests for a talk show. Rather, they were able to take pride in their craft without any expectations from the media.
"It was a time to be proud of our music," said Plant.
He also shared that he and his bandmates didn't expect to become so popular.
"It was just like kids going from playing in the Youth Club behind the church to playing in small clubs. The acceleration into another place was crazy," said Plant in the 2024 interview.
Plant also said that the idea of becoming a professional musician was appealing to him during his teenage years because he grew up in "a kind of very gray post-war" Britain. He also said that he has always "been a music fan and a fan of all things that are interesting."
