Broomfield measles outbreak adds four more cases, now up to seven total

Public health disease-trackers have identified four more cases of measles in an outbreak linked to two schools in Broomfield.

The newly announced infections all involve unvaccinated children between the ages of 5 and 17. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said in a news release Friday that all of the individuals are “tied to” either Broomfield High School or Broomfield Heights Middle School. Three of the individuals live in Adams County, while the fourth lives in Weld County.

The two schools are at the center of a growing measles outbreak that has now sickened at least seven children. Unvaccinated students, staff, volunteers and visitors have been told to stay away from the schools for 21 days, a length of time that corresponds with the incubation period of measles.

The latest cases were identified through contact-tracing, the boots-on-the-ground work of public health investigators to follow viral transmission chains, CDPHE said. But CDPHE and local public health investigators still have not found the likely source of the outbreak.

“The investigation is ongoing, but at this point, it seems most likely that the outbreak originated from someone else in the community or someone who traveled through the area with measles in early February and was not detected,” CDPHE spokesperson Kristin Richmann wrote in an email.

CDPHE released a new list of places where people may have been exposed to measles as a result of the outbreak — a collection including medical facilities, teen hangouts, a church and Denver International Airport. The windows for which exposure may have occurred are all at least one week old, meaning new infections could pop up for nearly another two weeks.

CDPHE maintains an updated list of all locations in Colorado where someone may have recently been exposed to measles on its website.

People who may have been exposed to measles should monitor themselves for symptoms. If symptoms appear — first fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, then the telltale red rash — people should call CDPHE at 720-653-3369 or their local public health agency.

Measles is among the most contagious diseases known, and outbreaks can expand rapidly. Colorado has now recorded eight measles cases in 2026, nearly a quarter of the 36 cases recorded last year, when Colorado saw the highest number of measles infections in a year since the 1990s.

Nationwide, in numbers updated Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 1,281 cases of measles, more than half of the 2,283 recorded in 2025. South Carolina, with at least 662 cases, has seen the most, but Utah, with 184 cases in 2026, and Florida, with 109 cases, are also seeing large outbreaks.
