Chicago’s busy O’Hare Airport issued a ground stop for departures Friday morning as a storm bringing heavy rain and “lots of lightning” moved through Illinois, with more than 70 flights canceled and another wave of storms coming in the afternoon.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the ground stop for departures at O’Hare due to thunderstorms was issued at 8:37 a.m. CT. It was expected to last through at least 10 a.m.
As of 9 a.m., 74 flights at O’Hare were canceled, with 20 canceled at Midway Airport.
The ground stop and cancellations comes as morning storms moving through the area were expected to “pack a punch,” with heavy downpours, thunder and lightning, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said.
“The thinking is this morning, the storms should stay below severe criteria, meaning we’re not looking at gusty, damaging winds through the mid-morning,” Roman said. “But we could see the storms packing a little bit of a punch with heavy rain and lightning.”
Friday morning’s rain will be the first of two stormy waves to hit the Chicago area. The morning round was expected to move mostly across northern Illinois and impact far north and west counties, along with areas in southeastern Wisconsin.
By about 10 a.m., the system was expected to push into Chicago.
About 12 p.m., some dry time was expected, before the second round moves in between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Those storms carry a higher risk of turning strong or severe, Roman said, with temperatures approaching the 60s to the west and the upper 70s to the south.
“Especially with the heating of the day, one or two stronger storms by late afternoon and evening hours,” Roman said.
According to the Climate Prediction Center, counties to the north and west will be under a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of five.
“This is where we could see storms that contain gusty damaging winds, hail,” Roman said. “The tornado threat is low but it’s not zero.”
Chicago and counties to the south and east will be under a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one.
The line of storms however will remain scattered, and “not everyone will see it,” Roman added.
Late Friday night, more scattered showers and storms with lightning, heavy downpours and gusty winds were expected, lasting through about 4 a.m.
Rain will come to an end Saturday, Roman said, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s followed by sunnier conditions and 60-degree temperatures Sunday.
