Former India batter Robin Uthappa has drawn an interesting comparison between Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and legendary captain MS Dhoni. Speaking on the CommBoxTV YouTube channel, Uthappa stated that the young batter uses a backfoot stance and off-stump guard, and Dhoni often used a similar approach.
Sooryavanshi recently won the Player of the Series award in the T20Is against Zimbabwe. The left-handed batter scored 151 runs in three matches at a stunning strike rate of over 196. After his impressive international run, the young batter is set to represent East Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2026.
Robin Uthappa pointed out that Vaibhav Sooyavanshi stays deep in his crease, waits on the back foot and stands slightly outside off stump, a method he compared to MS Dhoni's approach.
"What we are going to see because of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a whole change in batting technique. He has unlocked something that other players are going to leverage. His batting technique is that he doesn't go on the front foot a lot and stays on the back foot. MS Dhoni did that all the time, waiting on the back foot to get under the ball. You have to nail the yorker; that's the only option."

Robin Uthappa Wants Strike Rate to Decide IPL Orange Cap
Robin Uthappa also believes the IPL should change the criteria for the Orange Cap. The former batter suggested giving greater importance to strike rate while maintaining a minimum run requirement.
"You need a cap for strike rate now and not for runs anymore. If you can have anywhere over 350 to 400 runs and have a high strike rate, then we give them the orange cap. The ones who have won it before, it's become obsolete. It's the way the game has to evolve," said Uthappa.
The Rajasthan Royals batter scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30 and hit a record 72 sixes during the season. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also produced one of the most explosive innings of the tournament when he smashed 97 off 29 balls against SunRisers Hyderabad in the playoffs.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Set for Duleep Trophy Challenge
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will shift his attention to red-ball cricket. The 15-year-old has been named East Zone's vice-captain for the Duleep Trophy 2026, with Ishan Kishan set to lead the side.
East Zone will face North East Zone in the quarter-final at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2 in Bengaluru from August 23. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has limited first-class experience.
He made his debut for Bihar against Mumbai in 2024 and has played eight matches, scoring 207 runs in 12 innings at an average of 17.25. His highest score is 93, while his only first-class half-century came against Meghalaya in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season.
