Ryan Gosling Sneaks a Marching Band Into the Tonight Show for Eva Mendes Birthday

Eva Mendes thought she was just watching her husband promote his new movie. She had no idea a high school marching band was waiting for her.

On Wednesday's Tonight Show, Ryan Gosling was finishing an interview with Jimmy Fallon. With teachers packed into the studio audience and Project Hail Mary reviews being read out loud, he mentioned it was his wife's birthday. Then he asked if someone could get her on camera.

Mendes, who was watching from elsewhere in the building, was brought into the studio, at which point the North Bergen High School marching band was revealed behind her, followed by the audience singing 'Happy Birthday' while the band played. She looked genuinely caught off guard, immediately turning to the cameras and asking, 'You'll cut all this, right?.' Unsurprisingly, no, they would not.

Gosling had set the ambush up with Fallon in advance. 'She has no idea we're doing this,' he told the crowd before she walked in. For her part, Mendes spent the first moments of her surprise trying to thank the teachers in the room rather than acknowledge herself. 'You're so underpaid,' she told them. 'I had so many amazing teachers mentor me.'

The birthday moment was the emotional peak of an interview that had already covered plenty of ground. Gosling, who hosts Saturday Night Live for the fourth time this weekend, recalled the advice Mike Myers gave him before his first time hosting. Myers came into his dressing room and said he had something to pass along from Gilda Radner. 'The show is a monster and it needs to eat every Saturday night,' Gosling quoted him, 'and tonight it's having you for dinner.' Gosling called Myers 'a huge hero of mine' and said the line captured exactly what the experience feels like.

He also got candid about a childhood teacher who changed his reading habits with an unexpected incentive system. Whoever read the most books by the end of the year got to ride in her red Jeep. Gosling finished second. 'I won the New Kids on the Block CD,' he said, 'and I really wanted it. I've never read that many books in my life since.' When she left at the end of the year, a young Gosling, who had apparently watched Dead Poets Society well before most kids his age, stood on his desk and shouted 'O Captain! My Captain!' to send her off. 'No one got the reference,' he told Fallon. 'I don't even think she got the reference.'

In Project Hail Mary, Gosling plays a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship far from earth and discovers the fate of humanity depends on him. He co-stars with actress Sandra Hüller and a practical puppet alien named Rocky, operated by five puppeteers who called themselves the 'Rocketeers'. Gosling credited puppeteer James Ortiz with essentially becoming the character. 'Rocky would never do that,' Gosling recalled Ortiz insisting during rehearsals. 'We were like, 'Whoa.'

The film hits theaters March 20th. Everyone in the studio audience, including the marching band, was sent to an advance screening after the show.
