The new Epstein files’ most shocking details and how they could hurt Trump

The US Justice Department has posted new files relating to allegations Donald Trump sexually abused a minor that had been missing from previous releases of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein.

The handful of files contains further details of a series of 2019 FBI interviews with a woman who said she was a sexual assault victim of the late sex offender Epstein.

The woman also alleged that she was abused by Trump in the 1980s when she was aged around 13.

Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and has claimed that the Epstein files have exonerated him.

What do the missing files say?

The Justice Department (DoJ) released the new files after several media organisations accused it of withholding files containing allegations against Trump, who associated with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s. The department has now claimed that they withheld the files because they were wrongly labelled “duplicative”.

The files include 16 new pages that include summaries and notes from three separate interviews with the woman, conducted by the FBI, which describe the sexual assault allegations in detail.

The woman first contacted federal law enforcement in 2019, shortly after Epstein’s arrest. She alleged that the financier assaulted her on Hilton Head Island in her home state of South Carolina when she was about 13, believed to have taken place around 1984.

In the interviews she said Epstein “drove her and/or flew her to either New York or New Jersey” where she went to a “very tall building with huge rooms” in which Trump allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Trump allegedly “mentioned something to the effect of: ‘Let me teach you how little girls are supposed to be’”, according to the description of the woman’s comments.

Previous releases included some of the FBI interviews, in which the woman alleged that Epstein introduced her to Trump who, she claimed, tried to force her to perform a sex act before punching her in the head and having her removed from the room.

The FBI conducted follow-up interviews later that year, on 24 July, 7 August, 20 August and 16 October.

She told the FBI that her mother was blackmailed by Epstein and how for years after her ordeal she received physical and verbal threats that she believed were directed by Epstein.

In the fourth interview, the woman asked agents “what’s the point?” of coming forward with allegations after the statute of limitations had likely passed, according to the document.

The new documents do not include any details about whether the agents thought the allegations were credible.

On Thursday, Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said the documents were “completely baseless” and “backed by zero credible evidence”. She questioned the credibility of the accuser, whose name is redacted, pointing to her criminal record.

The DoJ has reiterated its previous warning that the Epstein files contain false and unverified claims.

“Some of the documents contain untrue and sensationalist claims against President Trump that were submitted to the FBI right before the 2020 election,” it said. “To be clear, the claims are unfounded and false, and if they have a shred of credibility, they certainly would have been weaponised against President Trump already.”

How these files could hurt Trump

The Epstein files have been a constant thorn in Trump’s side. His administration tried for months to prevent their publication and it was only the passing of the Epstein Files Transparency Act through Congress last year that forced the DoJ to release them.

The issue has prompted allies to break with him, with Republicans backing the Epstein bill, and formerly close Maga allies such as former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene to turn against him entirely.

On Sunday, as the US bombed Iran, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who helped push the Epstein bill through Congress, said: “Bombing a country on the other side of the globe won’t make the Epstein files go away.”

Robert Garcia, Democrat Congressman and ranking member of the House Oversight Committee investigating the Epstein files said: “We are going to end this White House cover-up.”

He called on Republicans to join Democrats in getting Trump to appear before the committee, posting on X: “President Trump appears in the files more than anyone besides Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. We hope Republicans will join us in getting him in front of our Committee.”

The committee voted this week to subpoena the attorney general, Pam Bondi, to testify about the DoJ’s handling of the case against Epstein and the release of the files.

However, the new files are only coming as Trump continues to direct the US military to bomb Iran.

Mark Shanahan, associate professor of political engagement at the University of Surrey, told The i Paper: “There’s always a good time to bury bad news, and the DoJ has chosen to release these files at a time when America is at war with Iran and in the wake of Kristi Noem’s dismissal yesterday.

“The White House will certainly want the cacophony of news noise to provide cover for this release which, in a normal presidency, with a normal president could be devastating. While the allegations contained in the files may be entirely spurious, the Democrats in Congress will undoubtedly call for further and full investigation.”

“Despite a war, the taint of Epstein won’t go away and his corrosive effect continues to blight Trump – despite so many other serious issues competing for the public’s attention.”

The content of the files could lead to Trump being impeached if Congress find him to have committed “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanours”, as laid out in Article II, Section Four of the US Constitution.

However, at present, Trump’s Republicans control the House and will never allow him to be impeached. The real risk comes if the Democrats win back the House or even the Senate in the midterms. They have been openly threatening to impeach him.

The Epstein Files Transparency Act allows the DoJ to withhold records that contain victim information, child sexual abuse materials or information that could jeopardise an ongoing federal investigation or prosecution.

Documents cannot be withheld “on the basis of embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity, including to any government official, public figure, or foreign dignitary”.

More files are set to be released

A further 47,635 files are expected to be released by the DoJ today.

The Justice Department said in a statement on Wednesday that it was working to “address victim concerns, redact personally identifiable information and any images of a sexual nature” in these files and had taken them offline for further review and redaction.

However, there is no evidence in the Wayback Machine internet archive that these documents had ever been posted on the DoJ website before.
