The Chicago Bears spent a chunk of their Thursday clearing salary cap space with a pair of moves. It began with a trade of wide receiver DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills. Later, the release of linebacker Tremaine Edmunds created even more space under the 2026 NFL salary cap.
And yet, there were questions about how much space the Bears had cleared.
I don’t know too many better sources when it comes to NFL capology than Over The Cap’s Jason Fitzgerald, who shared an update on the Bears’ salary cap situation in his post on Chicago’s release of Edmunds (bold emphasis mine):
With Edmunds release and the upcoming trade of DJ Moore the Bears have shed $39.5 million in salary commitments and gained $31.5 million in cap space. Once the Bears process Drew Dalman’s retirement they will be up to about $33 million in cap room which will rank 12th in the NFL. Their payroll should drop to 26th in the league meaning they should have plenty of resources to be active in free agency and/or the trade market.
All of that sounds good to me!

A sight for sore eyes is news that Chicago will be around $33 million under the 2026 NFL salary cap. That the team will rank 12th in cap space is also wonderful to see. Chicago’s front office went from navigating a tedious cap landscape to having ample spending room to address some obvious needs. This team could use a starter at center, left tackle, defensive tackle, linebacker, cornerback, and safety. And while General Manager Ryan Poles won’t be able to fill all of those holes via free agency, he could take a chunk out of his to-do list early next week.
