Billy Porter is reflecting on his terrifying battle with sepsis last year and candidly revealing just how close he came to dying.
The longtime actor, 56, was in the middle of his run in the Broadway production of Cabaret in September 2025 when he was unexpectedly diagnosed with sepsis. During an appearance on Outlaws with TS Madison on Monday (March 2), Porter explained that he was at a doctor's appointment for a "routine check" when they made the discovery.
Looking back, Porter says doctors found that a kidney stone "was trapped in [his] urethra," causing a buildup of toxic waste.

"When they got in there, there was so much puss, and bile, and infection behind the stone. It bubbled up and I went uroseptic in minutes," he shared on the podcast.
The severe form of sepsis is known to begin in the urinary tract when an infection goes untreated and then travels to the kidneys, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Porter was eventually put on an ECMO machine, AKA an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine, which serves as a life-support system for patients with severe, reversible heart or lung failure.
When he was finally stable enough to be taken off the machine, Porter was told his leg "had gone into compartment syndrome, which is when the muscles close in on themselves and cut off the oxygen."
"So they had to cut me open on either side of my leg while I was in a coma, and from my knee to my hip, and leave it open for two days, so they could save my leg," he explained.
Porter continued, "I was dead for three days. I am a miracle. I'm a walking miracle...I am so grateful to be here. It is such a gift."
Porter when on to share that the experience changed the way he lives his life, especially in the public eye.
"As I sat in my hospital bed, reflecting, there were a couple of things I heard. The first thing I heard was: Work smarter, not harder. The second thing I heard was: Be obedient and answer the call. And the third thing I heard was: Don't you ever stop telling the truth again," Porter concluded.
