1999 Hit Film, Starring 70s Movie Icon, Turns 27 Today

27 years ago, on Thursday, this iconic comedy movie was released.

On March 5, 1999, the film Analyze This came out in movie theaters. Starring Robert De Niro, the crime comedy movie followed Paul Vitti (De Niro), a member of the Mafia who suffers from anxiety attacks and gets help from psychiatrist Dr. Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal). Other cast members included Lisa Kudrow, Chazz Palminteri, Joe Viterelli and Bill Macy.

Analyze This was directed by Harold Ramis, who co-wrote the script with Kenneth Lonergan and Peter Tolan. The movie was released by Warner Bros. Pictures and Roadshow Entertainment, making $176.9 million worldwide, and received positive reviews. Three years after its release, a sequel titled Analyze That came out in 2002, with De Niro and Crystal reprising their roles.

Though De Niro is mostly known for his dramatic roles that he played during the 1970s and 1980s, the 82-year-old actor also had success in comedy films. In a press conference that took place in December 2002 to promote Analyze That, De Niro spoke about his thought process when it comes to acting in comedy movies.

"I could comedy in a certain way, I do other stuff down the line, and take more chances. I have to do [it] in a way where I can sense the humor in a situation and the irony," De Niro said. "Meet The Parents is a little different, obviously, and that’s not the character I play in Analyze This and Analyze That. I felt subtle in another way."

De Niro was also asked what it was like working with Crystal in both films, specifically if having chemistry off-screen makes a difference while filming.

"I think it makes a big difference if you relate to each other. It does help a lot. It can work and it’s fine unless the relationship is such that that kind of rapport is not needed, and then it’s okay," the actor answered. "The audience will never know or notice or whatever. In our case, it does help. We like each other. We respect each other and have fun."
