A sequel to the Academy Award-nominated film, The Wild Robot, is now in the works.
Announced by TheWrap on Thursday, DreamWorks Animation is developing a sequel to The Wild Robot. Titled The Wild Robot Escapes, it will be based on the second book in the popular book series written by Peter Brown. Troy Quane will be directing the sequel, alongside Heidi Jo Gilbert, who served as the Head of Story on the first film. Meanwhile, Jeff Hermann will return as a producer, while Chris Sanders, the director of The Wild Robot, will write the screenplay for the upcoming sequel.

Released in theaters in September 2024, The Wild Robot follows Rozz (Lupita Nyong'o), a service robot stranded on an empty island after a shipwreck. Adapting to the harsh environment, she learns to communicate with wildlife, adopts an orphaned gosling named Brightbill (Kit Connor), and builds a makeshift family with a fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal). The voice cast for the animated film also included Mark Hamill, Stephanie Hsu, Matt Berry and Ving Rhames.
During its box office run, The Wild Robot grossed $143.9 million in North America and $189.9 million in other territories, bringing the worldwide total to $334.1 million. The animated film was also nominated for three Oscars at the 97th Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score and Best Sound, and received positive reviews from critics and viewers.

So far, The Wild Robot Escapes is in the very early stages of pre-production, and it has not been reported whether the original cast will be coming back for the sequel. An official release date has not been announced either.
