Bob Rucho, a former state senator, has resigned his seat on the State Board of Elections.
State Auditor Dave Boliek announced Thursday he has appointed Angela Hawkins of Wake County to replace Rucho.
Hawkins was appointed chairman of the Wake board last year.
“This office has high standards for its board members, and Angela Hawkins will continue the good work being done by the State Board. She brings valuable experience, having served as chair of the elections board of North Carolina’s largest county,” Boliek said in a statement.
Boliek’s statement did not address the reason for Rucho’s resignation.
A 2024 law, still under litigation, took Board of Elections appointment powers away from incoming Democratic Gov. Josh Stein, and gave them to Boliek, a Republican.
State and local elections boards went from majority Democrat to majority Republican.
The state Board of Elections on Thursday appointed former Apex mayor and current Wake elections board member Keith Weatherly chairman of the Wake board.
The state board also appointed Donna Simpson Williams to fill the vacancy on the Wake board left by Hawkins..
