Maton was diagnosed with a partial patellar tendon tear last month. He has been out since July 20 and was transferred to the 60-day injured list a few weeks ago. This is the first season of Maton’s two-year, $14.5MM free agent contract. It was Chicago’s first multi-year bullpen signing in seven seasons. The first year hasn’t gone according to plan, as Maton was tagged for a 6.18 earned run average across 27 2/3 innings. He first landed on the injured list with knee tendinitis back on April 8. It seems Maton has essentially been pitching at less than 100% for the entire season.
Chicago had counted on Maton to serve as a key setup man this season. The back of the bullpen has increasingly become an issue. Cubs relievers have blown seven saves over the past month, tied for second most in MLB (behind San Francisco’s nine) in that stretch.
Closer Jacob Webb has allowed multiple runs in four of his last six appearances. Ryan Zeferjahn, acquired from the Angels to work as a high-leverage arm, has blown two leads and given up 10 runs over 13 innings in a Cubs uniform. Daniel Palencia has struggled since coming back from an elbow injury that cost him two months. Trent Thornton has given up runs in three of his last five outings.
Maton is making a $5.5MM base salary this season. He’ll be paid a $6MM salary next season and is guaranteed another $3MM in the form of a buyout on an $8.5MM club option covering the 2028 campaign.
