CSU Rams outlast New Mexico at The Pit for eighth straight win

Colorado State men’s basketball held off a late rally by New Mexico to claim an 82-74 victory over the Lobos late Wednesday night at The Pit in Albuquerque.

The win was the eighth in a row for the Rams, who secured a 20-win season in the first year for head coach Ali Farokhmanesh while improving to 11-8 in the Mountain West Conference. It was also CSU’s first win at The Pit since 2022.

With one game remaining in the regular season, the Rams are in a four-way tie for fifth place in the league standings with Boise State, Nevada and UNLV. CSU (20-10) is also one game behind Grand Canyon for fourth place.

Depending on how this weekend’s final games shake out, the Rams could end up anywhere from the fourth to the eighth seed in the upcoming Mountain West tournament.

Wednesday night at the The Pit, the Rams led almost the entire game after jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead. The game was tied three times in the first nine minutes, but CSU never trailed.

In the second half, the Rams extended their lead to a game-high 19 points after a free throw by JoJo McIver gave them a 54-35 lead with 16:02 left. CSU led by 19 on two other occasions before the Lobos started to cut into the Rams’ advantage.

New Mexico got within four points at 75-71 with 38 seconds remaining, but the Rams closed the game with a 7-3 run, going 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 35 seconds.

Kyle Jorgensen led the Rams with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Carey Booth and Brandon Rechsteiner each scored 13 while Jase Butler and Augustinas Kiudulas each had 11. The Rams shot 59% from the field to New Mexico’s 46%.

The Lobos outrebounded the Rams 29-28. Booth and Rechsteiner lead the Rams with five each. CSU had 19 assists on 24 made field goals. CSU had 20 turnovers but were able to hold the New Mexico to 26 points off of them.
