Dog owners are the most selfish people on the planet

Is there a more selfish group in Britain than dog owners? They allow their pets off-leash to the detriment of the public, they bring them to restaurants and sit their bare bottoms on human seats, and their excrement piles up in the streets.

Plus, some are rejecting expert advice and insisting on breeding or owning dogs which have painful defects, just because they find them more physically attractive that way.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare wants to stop this – and has launched a tool to determine if a dog is healthy, in an attempt to stop the breeding of dogs with harmful characteristics such as short noses, flat faces and shortened legs.

The list of dogs which will be banned include 67 of Britain’s most popular breeds, like the corgi, the dachshund and the shih tzu. For now the health checklist is voluntary, but The Times reports it is expected to become law within five years.

And of course, the dog people are complaining. Online commenters say it’s an attack on “innocent dogs”, breeders say it’s unfair and the editor of Dogs Today magazine has told The Times it is “madness”.

Yet, if there is evidence from experts that breeding certain types of dogs causes them excruciating pain and cruel health issues – and the tool is endorsed by the likes of the Royal Veterinary Collage, the British Veterinary Association and the RSPCA – why would you want to continue doing it? For a nation of so-called dog lovers, it’s incredibly selfish.

Dachshunds, for instance, have horrific health problems. The kneecaps on their shortened legs slip; the discs on their elongated spines degenerate, which causes them severe pain and even paralysis. This is something we’ve known for a while. If you love these creatures, the kindest thing to do is to not own one, and to stop supporting their breeders. Those breeders create dogs who have a life of pain, frustration and constant trips to the vet in their future.

And those vet bills aren’t cheap either. They are rising due to the increased demand, and people can’t keep up. Not to mention the insurance premiums for owning specific breeds with known health risks is rising too. It means that owners are delaying treatment, leaving dogs in pain.

It’s unthinkably irresponsible to purchase an animal with known and serious health risks, unless you can afford to pay for their treatment for the rest of their pain-filled lives.

When the going gets tough, or expensive, more and more owners are getting rid of their pets. The RSPCA recorded more than 22,000 abandonment cases in 2025, a rise of 25 per cent on 2024 and the highest figure for five years.

That, not the potential ban on breeding, is what is truly unfair. We must stop breeding these creatures who are only born to suffer.
