Spring forward this weekend and not just because clocks change Sunday. San Diego County has a full slate of openings, closings, homecomings and celebrations to pull you off the couch and into the sunshine.

This opening weekend, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido debuts its massive Denny Sanford Elephant Valley – the largest expansion in the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s 109-year history. After years of construction, the immersive new habitat finally lets guests walk among the herd across a sprawling landscape that replicates the animals’ native environment. Open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and included with park admission, which runs about $78 for adults and slightly less for children. 

    Get your hands dirty at “Food Waste Fridays” at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. The weekly learning lab runs 9:30 a.m. to noon through April 24, with a hands-on look at composting, decomposers and red wiggler worms. Included with garden admission (about $18 for adults).

    It’s closing weekend for the 2025-26 Artist Alliance Biennial at the Oceanside Museum of Art, featuring 53 juried works by regional artists. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. General admission is $10.

    Anime fans can dance the night away at the #WeTouchGrass Anime Rave at Spin Nightclub in Mission Hills, Friday at 9 p.m. The 21-and-over event features cosplay, anime-themed cocktails and DJ sets inspired by popular shows. Tickets are $34.80.

    Families can explore more than 100 hands-on STEM activities, demonstrations and stage performances at the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Petco Park. Admission is free and parking is $10.

    Residents looking to trim their utility bills can stop by the free Home Energy Fair at La Mesa Library, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Hosted by the city and San Diego County Library, the event offers tips on reducing energy use and information on assistance programs. Attendees will be entered to win smart thermostats and LED bulbs.

    Classic car enthusiasts and double-double devotees can head to the monthly Poway Cruisers Car Show at In-N-Out Burger at 12890 Gregg Court, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Free admission, animal-style optional.

    Several events around San Diego County mark International Women’s Day (March 8):

    The Bloom Together Celebration, focused on women’s economic empowerment, runs 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at FruitCraft in Vista. Tickets are $50-$65. The International Women’s Day Brunch & Maker’s Market takes over Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Liberty Station, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, with brunch stations, a women-owned marketplace and curated beverage pairings. Tickets start at $55. The “Pass the Torch” celebration brings together generations of women for art, performances and an East African food showcase, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans in City Heights.     The San Diego Gulls host two themed games at Pechanga Arena in the Midway District: First Responders Night on Friday against the Rockford IceHogs (7 p.m., tickets from $24) and Aloha Night on Saturday against the same squad (6 p.m., tickets from $19, with a Gulls aloha shirt giveaway).

    Fans of the Piano Man can catch tribute act Billy Nation at The Magnolia in El Cajon Saturday. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $13.
