DUBAI — As the conflict in the Middle East widens, thousands of students and travelers are struggling to leave the region due to restricted airspaces.
Anthony D’Amore, a junior at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Dubai campus, decided to end his semester early. D’Amore spoke with News10NBC’s Utica affiliate about the challenges of leaving the United Arab Emirates.
“It is scary. I have heard a couple of explosions. I’ve heard fighter jets flying over. Most of these projectiles, they’re being intercepted, which is nice to know, but a couple are making it through,” D’Amore said.
His parents expressed their concerns about the situation. “It’s been so stressful, because we want to get him out of there. We’re concerned for his safety and the safety of his fellow students studying abroad,” said his mother, Laura D’Amore.
The U.S. has told American citizens to leave more than a dozen countries, including the United Arab Emirates, for their safety amid the conflict. However, transportation options remain limited. The U.S. State Department says it’s “actively securing” military and charter aircraft to fly Americans out of the region and is in contact with nearly 3,000 citizens seeking assistance.
FlightAware, a flight tracking website, reported that nearly 70 flights were delayed and more than 500 were canceled Thursday morning at Dubai International Airport.
