"I'll never let you go, why? Because I love you."
This iconic 1960s song made history 66 years ago, when it was the No. 1 song in the United Kingdom for almost a month.
Anthony Newley’s "Why" hit number 1 on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks, from Feb. 5 to March 4, 1960. It was his first of two chart-topping songs that year, the other being "Do You Mind?". The song was a cover of a 1959 U.S. hit by Frankie Avalon. Originally released as a single, "Why" later appeared on various compilation albums, including The Best Of Anthony Newley, Anthology: The Deluxe Collection and Why?.
The Official Singles Chart Top 100 is broadcast by BBC Radio 1 every Friday, and reflects the UK's biggest songs of the week, based on audio and video streams, downloads, CDs and vinyl, compiled by the Official Charts Company.

Newley’s 1960 hit "Why?" is considered a genius pop song for its simple, direct and conversational approach to love and relationships. The track was produced by Johnny Gregory, who also directed the music video for the song, and was released in January 1960 via Decca Records.
Known as a "latter-day British Al Jolson," Newley achieved widespread success in music, stage and on screen. He grew up in London and gained popularity in 1958 when he starred in No Time To Die and Idol in Parade. In the early 1960s, he started experimenting with songwriting, releasing a string of hits throughout the decade. Throughout his career, Newley won a Grammy in 1963 for his song "What Kind of Fool Am I?" with Leslie Bricusse, as well as received many Tony nominations and an Oscar nomination for his work on Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory soundtrack.
Newley passed away in Florida on April 14, 1999, after battling renal cancer for 14 years. He was 67 years old and was survived by his five children, a granddaughter and his mom, who was alive at the time.
