“When people ask, ‘How could you have anything to do with your dad? How could you not have hated him? How could you have just not turned your back on him?’ My answer is always, ‘He gave me something so precious, and that was hope,’” McGraw said on The Tim Ferriss Podcast.

The “My Best Friend” singer went on to add, “Whether he meant to, and he didn’t or knew it, he gave me a reason to think that I can get out of the situation that I was in. That if he can do that, then I have it in me to do something. And so for that reason alone, I couldn’t hate him. If everything else is gone, if you got hope, you still got a chance.”

Tim grew up believing that his mother Betty’s husband Horace Smith was his father. When he was 11 years old, Tim discovered his birth certificate and learned professional baseball player Tug was his biological dad.

It got worse from there because Tim got to meet Tug at one of his games, only to have the latter deny he fathered the country singer. This began years of an estranged relationship until Tim was an adult and they were able to form a close bond before Tug died in 2004.

The legendary singer also revealed that the point where things changed between him and Tug was when Tim needed money for college. They had a candid conversation that ultimately led to a shift in their relationship, though it took time.

Tim has spent the last over 20 years remembering and honoring his father, especially through song. The country crooner dedicated “Live Like You Were Dying” at the Field of Dreams concert in Iowa last summer to Tug.
