ROCHESTER, N.Y. — In celebration of National Women’s History Month, News10NBC visited the Rochester Museum and Science Center (RMSC) to explore influential women featured in the museum’s “Changemakers” exhibit.
The exhibit highlights the lives and works of more than 200 women from the region. Although the full exhibit ran a few years ago, parts of it remain on the second floor. The museum says it plans to incorporate some of the Changemaker stories into permanent exhibitions.
The Changemakers exhibit focuses on women whose stories haven’t always been told, including Rochester and Haudenosaunee women. Interactive maps allow visitors to explore stories by region, and a holographic machine brings some of these stories to life with short biographies.
After viewing the exhibit, News10NBC’S Erin Mahon spoke with visitors about women they find influential. Some mentioned historical figures like Susan B. Anthony.
“Susan B. Anthony. Oh absolutely. Absolutely. And she’s from this area,” said Dee Roy and Pat Fowler. When asked what Anthony’s name brings to mind, Roy and Fowler said, “Voting rights. Definitely. She was just a strong woman. She– spunky. Very spunky. She wouldn’t take anything from anybody.”
Others thought of personal figures like their mothers. “Because she does everything for us. And whenever we need her, she’s there,” said Diana Hristodoulou.
Steve Markham mentioned a professional influence, saying, “It was my boss’ boss. Her name is Suzanne Quack. She was great. She, you know, engineer herself. Very down to earth. Very influential.”
The RMSC offers a full virtual tour of the exhibit, where visitors can explore the interactive “Map of Change” to learn more about the women highlighted.
