Reiner, who died in December 2025 at the age of 78, discussed making This Is Spinal Tap in a 2004 interview with the Television Academy Foundation. He explained that making the rock mockumentary “wasn’t a typical first-time director experience,” due to the cast, which included Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, improvising their dialogue.
“There was no script and so, you know, it was all improvised. And it was all shot like a documentary, so it wasn’t, you know, like having to set up shots in a traditional way that a director would, you know, design a movie. I mean, we were kind of flying by the seat of our pants and, you know, improvising as we went along,” said Reiner.
Reiner, who noted that the movie did have a loose plot outline before it was filmed, also said that This Is Spinal Tap “took [him] 9 months to cut” in the editing room.
“So basically the writing for the film was done in the cutting room,” explained the Princess Bride director in the 2004 interview.
In addition, the filmmaker said that This Is Spinal Tap was initially misunderstood by audiences.
“When it first came out, people thought it was a real band. And then people didn’t understand why would I make a movie about a band that nobody had ever heard of, and that was so bad,” said Reiner.
According to Reiner, he had to explain that it was satire.
“It took a while for people to catch up to it and realize that it was a spoof,” said Reiner.
