Oh, Johan Rojas ALSO Reportedly Tested Positive for Performance-Enhancing Drugs

So that’s why Phillies outfielder Johan Rojas was removed from the Dominican Republic WBC roster (replaced by old friend Junior Lake).

This comes fresh on the heels of word about Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar failing his second PED test, and the timing is not entirely a coincidence, because sometimes these things happen in the offseason and then don’t leak out until we get closer to the season (or, in this case, to the WBC):

Johan Rojas is facing an 80-game suspension from MLB for a failed PED test during the offseason. He is appealing. Here’s what we know: t.co/RQW7I7dQvs

“The positive test, sources said, came during the offseason. The appeals process is typically shrouded; teams often do not know whether one of their players is appealing a test result. The WBC altered that timeline. In addition, Rojas recently fired an agent he had hired sometime during the offseason, according to sources.”

In other words, Johan Rojas may have tested positive a while ago, but was in an appeals process, so the Phillies had no clue this was coming. And then the World Baseball Classic arrived, which has eligibility rules, and that forced the issue here (likely the same situation with Profar).

Rojas, 25, is an elite defender, but light enough at the plate that he was not a lock to make the Phillies’ Opening Day roster in any case. A hit to their bench if this suspension goes through, perhaps, but probably not a massive impact to an otherwise still-well-stocked Phillies roster.

Unless I’m forgetting someone else, it’s a bit weird that the last five PED suspensions in MLB have been Jurickson Profar twice and then three Phillies (Rojas, Jose Alvarado, and Max Kepler (I guess technically he’d just hit free agency)).

As for Profar, the appeal can still proceed, but the odds of a reprieve are quite low:

This is now official, with MLB announcing that Jurickson Profar tested positive for exogenous testosterone. His 162-game suspension begins Friday. Profar can still appeal it. The last time a PED suspension was overturned via grievance was more than a decade ago. t.co/eThWOGx0XI

The Braves issued a statement, and it’s actually pretty hilarious when looking back:

Just realized the Braves basically copy and pasted their statement from last year on Profar’s suspension this year….except they removed the word “surprised” which just perfectstill disappointed but not surprised pic.twitter.com/1Oq1Wk88Fl

We’ll see now what the Braves do about their outfield, and whether any additional surprising suspensions get handed down in the next couple weeks.
