Former Team India batter Mohammad Kaif made a huge remark about mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal clash against England, scheduled for Thursday, March 5, in Mumbai. Kaif said that Varun tends to panic when opposition batters start scoring runs against him.
Varun has taken 12 wickets from seven matches at an average of 15.33 and an economy rate of 7.66. The mystery spinner picked up nine wickets in four games during the group stage. However, in the Super 8 stage, he managed only three wickets in three matches and conceded runs at an economy rate of 10.17.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mohammad Kaif said that many batters are now coming well prepared with plans to face Varun Chakravarthy. He added that the spinner tends to move away from his usual wicket-to-wicket line, often bowling towards the pads instead.
“Many batters are now coming prepared, knowing exactly how to plan against him (Varun). That is where a slight problem can arise,” Kaif said.
"I have noticed that when he gets hit for runs, he sometimes shows a bit of panic. You can see it in the way he reacts. Instead of sticking to his natural wicket-to-wicket length, he starts bowling at the pads,” he added.

Kaif also stated that many players are waiting for Varun Chakravarthy to bowl his googly. He said that batters are treating Varun more like an off-spinner and hitting straight down the ground or towards long-on with the full face of the bat.
“Throughout this World Cup, I feel he has bowled very little leg-spin. He can work on his leg-spin because right now batsmen are waiting for his googly. Since the ball comes into the stumps, they treat it like an offspinner and expect it to turn inward. That is why many of them are able to hit him towards long-on and straight with a full face of the bat.”

During the same discussion, Mohammad Kaif stated that Varun Chakravarthy should rely more on his leg-spin, as that approach would allow the spinner to later surprise batters with a googly aimed at the stumps.
“I think Varun needs to focus more on his leg-spin as well. He can bowl outside the off-stump line with his leg-spin and then bring in the googly as a variation," the 45-year-old said.
"If he keeps bowling only googlies, batsmen may start reading him better. Instead of targeting the pads, he can attack outside off-stump with leg-spin and then surprise them with a googly aimed at the stumps. That could be a smarter plan for Varun,” he added.
Varun has played 43 T20Is and taken 71 wickets at an average of 15.63 and an economy rate of 7.23, including two five-wicket hauls. Team India will look to overcome England in the upcoming clash as they aim to move one step closer to defending their T20 World Cup title.
