“I Wanna Sex You Up” became an instant hit for the group, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song caused a bit of drama for the band because producer Dr. Freeze took a portion of Betty Wright‘s “Tonight Is the Night” to use in the Color Me Badd tune.
Wright sued the band and was ultimately rewarded with 35% of all the proceeds from “I Wanna Sex You Up.” The amount of money the song generated has not been made public, but it was featured on the soundtrack for the New Jack City movie starring Wesley Snipes, Judd Nelson, Ice-T,Chris Rock, and Mario Van Peebles, which added to the song's value.
