After more than 70 years of serving pizza, pasta and of course its famous sandwiches right by the water to the surfers and residents of Hermosa Beach, Mickey’s Deli is expanding inland a bit.
A second location of the South Bay staple opened at the end of February at 2716 Artesia Blvd. in North Redondo Beach, about four miles away from the original location at 101 Hermosa Ave.
“We always wanted to open a second location and I think for me it’s about carrying on the legacy that my grandfather and my dad have built, and many other of our families members have built over the last 70 years,” said Mickey Mance, the grandson of Michael Angelo “Mickey” Mance, who opened the original deli in 1953.
“We wanted to take this brand that people know and love and bring it to another community,” he said.
The senior Mance opened Mickey’s at the age of 22 when Italian food was starting to gain popularity in the United States after World War II. The spot sports a surfboard-shaped sign out front and neon signs on two windows that read “Mickey’s” on one side and “Sandwiches, Catering, Pasta” on the other. A mural on the patio depicting Mickey Mance senior sitting alongside Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando was added a few years ago.
Other than that not too much has changed through the years when it comes to the old school feel at the deli. People can order at the counter and do a bit of shopping, since the establishment also serves as a small market selling marinara sauce, pastas and other items.
The restaurant is now run by Mance, his father Paul Mance and business partner Justin Essman. The younger Mance said the second 1,100-square foot location, which is located next to a gas station at the corner of Inglewood Avenue and Artesia Boulevard, will have a lot of the same feel as the original Mickey’s, including a replica of its now famous mural.
“So much of what we did when we were creating this space was to take whatever details we could, from the wood paneling on the wall, or the floor and we have the mural that we recreated, the signage, to try and make it feel as much as we could like the Mickey’s in Hermosa,” Mance said.
The menu will also mirror the original menu with pizzas, pasta and sandwiches plus a new item created just for the new location; the Redondo Beach Chicken Cutlet.
“That sandwich is a fried to order chicken cutlet,” he said. “For right now that is a Redondo specific sandwich, that you can only get at the Redondo location,” Mance said.
