Joe Marler has revealed his dream castings for the second season of Celebrity Traitors – and why we shouldn't expect to see him on I'm a Celebrity or Strictly Come Dancing anytime soon.
The former rugby union player, who made 95 appearances for England across a 12-year international career before hanging up his boots in 2024 and was known in the game as a big character, emerged as one of the stars of the first run of the BBC show.
A second outing of Celebrity Traitors was swiftly confirmed, and fans are eagerly awaiting news of which famous faces we can expect to see in the castle next, with Alison Hammond, Danny Dyer and Hugh Grant among those rumoured.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Marler, who has signed up to play in goal for England at Soccer Aid 2026, revealed who his picks would be.
"I would love to see Roy Keane in there," he said. "I'd pay more than the TV licence to have Roy Keane in there. He would just be great viewing.
"Who else would I like to see in there? To be honest, you can put anyone in there as long as they love the game. As long as they're fans of the show and they're not just using it as a bit of a leg-up.
"I mean, the irony of me saying I'm basically dragging it out for as long as I can, but what I mean is as long as they're there to actually play the game and realise it's a game, I'll be happy.
"I like the sound of the rumours that are flying about. I'd love to see Alison Hammond come true. Another sort of Alan Carr character, where, if she's made a Traitor, that laugh is so distinct, it would just be so good.
"I'd love to see Roy Keane and, I mean, this guy would never do it, but Gary Oldman would just be incredible, wouldn't it? I wouldn't want him to play Gary Oldman. He'd have to play Jackson Lamb.
"We'll see how far this BBC licence can stretch in terms of those celebs going into the next series."
Quizzed on whether he had any advice for future contestants, he added: "Remember it's a game and be careful how much you eat. I put on eight kilos whilst we were filming there, so just be careful.
"It's like the opposite of I'm a Celeb. You go in the jungle, you're on like 700 calories a day or whatever. Everyone always loses weight. Celebrity Traitors, you're guaranteed to put it on."
View Green Video on the source websiteMarler has been tipped for BBC presenting roles since his spell in the castle but he's taking his time to carefully weigh up his next steps.
He explained: "I enjoyed my time on The Traitors. It was great fun. I was a big fan of the show. It was great to play it and I've enjoyed doing the TV bits.
"I'm still trying to navigate that world of retirement. What do I do now? How do I actually earn a living? I'm trying to work out this new world without rushing into anything.
"Yes, I'd love to do more TV but it's just about picking the right things going forward. You know, I spoke to an old teammate, James Haskell, who just does every reality show under the sun, and he turned around to me after The Traitors and said, 'Alright, what's next? Surely, you'll do the jungle next, surely you'll do Strictly?'
"And I was like, no. And he's like, 'Why wouldn't you do any of them?' And I go, because there's not really any longevity in that, mate. It's great fun, great experience, but I'm still trying to work it all out."
Marler will be back on our screens in May when England take on the World XI at the London Stadium for Soccer Aid 2026, having signed up to help "raise money for a great cause" and try to win favour with his eldest son.
He said: "He is football mad and a Man United fan – blame his uncle. He never respected me as a professional rugby player because I never scored a try for England, and he actually said that to me. Now it's my mission to try to get him to respect me. I'm not sure I'm going to do that, because I think I'll only gain that if I actually score a goal."
Given he's in the squad as a goalkeeper, scoring a goal will be no mean feat but viewers tuning in on Sunday 31 May should perhaps expect to see Marler leaving his net to charge up the pitch for a late corner.
"I can't imagine my teammates are going to be too happy about it," he admitted. "I think Tom Hiddleston and Olly Murs will be shouting and screaming at me, which will be a bit of a fever dream, but I need that goal.
"Soccer Aid is legendary, it is just so cool. And 20 years now, so I jumped at the chance to be a part of it. Just lots of good things about it, especially for the three-day training camp that they do, and the chance to play alongside and against legends of football will be incredible.
"Lower those expectations of me to the lowest that they can be and you'll be pleasantly surprised because, as I've said before, I was not very good at rugby but I was world class at making other people bad at it.
"I'll probably lean into that skill set for Soccer Aid. As long as I don't make my own teammates bad at it. I've got to get under the skin of the World XI."
Soccer Aid for UNICEF takes place on Sunday 31 May at the London Stadium. Adult tickets start from £20 and juniors from £10 at socceraid.org.uk/tickets.
