Real Madrid have suffered back-to-back losses in La Liga after going down at home to Getafe, leaving Barcelona four points clear at the top of the table.
Alvaro Arbeloa insisted nobody at Real Madrid will give up on their La Liga title chances, despite a humbling defeat to Getafe on Monday keeping them four points behind Barcelona.
Los Blancos were without several injured players, including Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé, as they attempted to respond to Barça’s 4-1 win over Villarreal on Saturday.
But Getafe left the Bernabeu as shock 1-0 victors, thanks to a wonderful 39th-minute volley from Martín Satriano.
Both teams had a player sent off in second-half stoppage time, with Madrid’s Franco Mastantuono dismissed for dissent and Getafe’s Adrián Liso shown a second yellow card when he kicked the ball away.
In truth, Madrid only carved out a couple of clear-cut chances to equalise as Getafe boss José Bordalás led his team to glory at the Bernabéu.
But when asked if the result could prove fatal for Madrid’s title hopes, Arbeloa said: “No, there are 36 points left and we have no other objective but to fight for those 36 points.
“No one is going to throw in the towel. Four points is a distance we believe we can make up. This is Real Madrid and no one is going to give up here.
“I know things look very dark. We know we have a lot to improve but I am not going to question the effort of the players. That we can do things better and it’s my responsibility.”
The Opta supercomputer isn’t so keen on Real Madrid’s chances following a second successive league defeat, having gone down 2-1 at Osasuna in their previous game.
Arbeloa’s side won the La Liga title in just 20.4% of the latest 10,000 simulations of the season by the supercomputer – down from 60% before that defeat to Osasuna on 21 February, when they’d led their rivals by two points after 24 games.
Barcelona are now the clear favourites, with the reigning champions picking up another La Liga title in 79.5% of current sims.
Madrid were booed by their supporters at both half-time and full-time, while Arbeloa drew the wrath of the home crowd when he withdrew 18-year-old debutant Thiago Pitarch after 55 minutes, with the youngster misplacing just five of his 47 passes on his debut.
But when asked about the substitution, Arbeloa said: “Thiago played a great game. It didn’t look like his first game for Madrid; with the personality he has shown.
“The change was not due to his performance, on the contrary. The fans whistled the change, and I accept and understand that.”
It was yet another game where Real Madrid fell behind and failed to secure any points.
They’ve now been in a losing position in seven games in 2025-26, recouping just five points from those matches. Barcelona, by comparison, have won a league-high 18 points from the 10 games they’ve been behind in.
Being without the integral Mbappé obviously didn’t help Madrid’s cause.
The Frenchman has been the outstanding striker in La Liga this season with 23 goals in 23 games, seven more than any other player. He’s attempted nearly a quarter of Madrid’s shots in La Liga in 2025-26 (23.2%), but his replacement Gonzalo García mustered just one in 90 minutes in this defeat.
Getafe boss Bordalás, meanwhile, secured an early present ahead of his 62nd birthday on Thursday. He’d never previously won in 16 La Liga games as a coach against Real Madrid (D2 L14), his worst record against any opponent across his Spanish top-flight managerial career.
He hailed his team’s defensive work after Madrid were limited to seven shots on target and 1.91 expected goals (xG), their lowest tally in a league home game since the end of September.
“Winning at the Bernabeu is not possible for everyone,” Bordelas said. “They are one of the best teams in history. We knew we would have to suffer.
“We knew there would be situations [for Madrid] but not as many as they are used to. The team worked phenomenally. This is the way – to have a winning mentality and be capable of beating any opponent.”
Real Madrid’s next test is a trip to Celta Vigo on Friday night, against arguably the surprise team of 2025-26.
Claudio Giráldez’s side sit in sixth place with 40 points from their 26 games – their best points tally at this stage of a La Liga season since 2015-16 when they eventually finished sixth.
Madrid have already lost to Celta Vigo this season in La Liga, going down 2-0 at home in December, a month before Xabi Alonso was sacked.
They’ve not lost both games in a La Liga season against them since 1998-99. They’ll hope to avoid that feat again, with a potential defeat certain to leave their title hopes in tatters.
